Media Company Case Study Task 1 Understand the structure and ownership of the media sector your name here
2
A private company is a company from ether TV radio etc.is a company that is owned privately and not paid by the public and not organized by the government. This allows it to be able to not be as restricted with the things that get aired show the shows can be more varied than it would be if the channel is not privacy owned. But they may sell shears of there company out to other company's. Some privet ownership in the media industry are the ITV and channel 4. Some of the disadvantages of Privet ownership is that they have don’t have much leeway about the things that can be aired. They are eligible so they can get support from advertisement this allows tem to make a profit which would not be allowed if they were a public service channel.Although there has been some conterverces that private ownership company's tends to put the profit for the company above that of the public. Types of ownership: private ownership
3
Public service is for example a TV channel that is owned by the government to browedcast and they are funded by the people not by advertisement. A public service company is the BBC. Some advantages of public service they are funded by the public from the TV license that comes out of the weekly tax this means that they have a large budget for their channel. A disadvantage is they will need to make a station for everyone since every body is paying for it. Types of ownership: public service
4
Types of ownership: independent Independent ownership are company's that are owned by them self's these are usually smaller business but that is not always the case. An example of this is Sony is a independent TV production companies they make shows such as Goglebox. Also there are a lot of independent record company's for example Truck Records or Factory Records. One of the main advantages for an independent record company is that they are able to make a profit from all 3 factors production, disteurbutionm and consumption. One of the disadvantages is that an independent record company will not get much of a budget to make the songs to start of with until the band or artist gets popular.
5
A conglomerate is when two or more company's from different business combine to make company. Some company's that have done this are Universal studio. An advantage of this is that it can stop a business from going bust as well as branching out the company into different industry's which will expand their income. A disadvantage is that it may increase the cost for the business since it will have more funds to manage. Also it may cause the company to give themselves too much to handle because it will up scale the business. An example of conglomerate is channel 4 they have their original channel 4 then they have 4 films and 4music. Types of ownership: conglomerate
6
A horizontal integration is when companies of the same type of industry join together to make multiple stages of the production of a product. Some advantages of this is that the organization of the company easier to manage, The company will join up into one larger company. Also have a larger production line since there will be more people in the company to speed up the production. Some disadvantages of this is that it can give a group of people too much responsibility which can lead to company being disorganized. Also if there is no strategy behind the horizontal integration then the company will only lose money from the integration. Types of Companies: Horizontal Integration
7
This is when a companies of different industries come together to make one company that has multiple industries to make a profit from production, distribution and consumption for example Warner Brothers make films and distributes them as well. Some advantages is that a company can have a broader range of income also it will give a better form of coordination between the three types production, distribution and consumption. Some disadvantages is that the differences between the industries for example make the film is very different to distributing it.It will also have a higher cost to run the business as a whole. The main issue that vertical integration will face if one of the production, distribution and consumption dose a bad job then it will bring down the rest of the groups which will make the company lose money Types of Companies: Vertical Integration
8
Cross media convergence when a company works with different platforms in the media industry for example working with TV, Film and radio.for example Warner Brothers works with films as well as branching out to make games, animated films and music. Another example is Britons Got Talent this has both the TV and the music industry overlap in one show the same thing is done in most adverts it has the music industry because of the songs that are on the advert and the TV because its and advert but it can also be related to film if the advert is a film trailer. An advantage of this is that thy have more sores of income, a disadvantage is that if there is music they will need to pay for the music. Cross Media convergence
9
Synergy is merchandise that will be sold along side the product for example T shirts. They do this in order to expand the income of a creation type of product. For example if there is a band or artist they will make a T-shirt which can be sold to their fans this will both ingress the income of the band or artist and promote them to the people who see them wearing it. An advantage is that they will give a profit to clothing companies and the people who make the product. Synergy
10
ITV belongs to the TV industry It is a public service that used to be independent but changed company that produces TV shows ITV is owned by ITV plc, STV Group plc and UTV media plc they do not own any other companies ITV has used vertical integration by splitting its network up into ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV news. There competitors are other TV companies such as the BBC and Channel 4. This is because if people are watching other TV networks their channel will lose some of its profits, also the higher the views the more money they will get. To stop illegal download they make it easier for there viewers to watch there product on demand legal on their website There audience is varied is all people who own free view TV but the different channels of ITV are aimed at different audiences for example ITV2 is aimed at people aged 16 to 26 who are working class. The views of the main channel ITV1 changes depending on the day and time. For example ITV1 has 43,243 people who watch the channel at 9:30 pm. There main audience is working class mixed gender with people from mixed ages. In 2013 ITV got rebranded which had been done in order to make ITV1 to be called just ITV Although the channel has not got much controversies, but a some of there shows have for example the Xfactor has gained a lot of controversies from the judges cheating and multiple voting scandals to having voice manipulation technology being used in the auditions. BBC is the British Broadcast Corporation it is a public service which is owned by the British government. The BBC is mainly broadcast from London but now it has expanded so there are points of broadcast all over Britton including media city in Salford and Bristle. Because it is a public service broadcast it gets its founding from the public which they get from the TV licence which is gathered annually by the government. There was also an integration with the BBC radio show in 1932 BBC ownership
12
BBC has been trough multiple changes through out the age. For example the BBC has been through both vertical and horizontal integration. With horizontal integration they have joined their TV channels up so they to not just have one TV channel they have multiple channels which are each different, for example there are the original channel BBC 1 and they also have a news channel BBC news. They have also been through vertical integration because they have joined up with a different company for distribution so they make it easier to distribute their shows. BBC

BBC One BBC Two BBC Three BBC Four CBBC Cbeebes BBC News BBC Parliament BBC ALBA Channels and stations BBC Radio 1 BBC Radio 1 Extra BBC Radio 2 BBC Radio 3 BBC Radio 4 BBC Radio 4 Extra BBC Radio 5 BBC Radio 5 Extra BBC Radio 6 BBC Aisan Network BBC World Service BBC Radio Scotland BBC Radio Wales They also have radio shows for most regions
14
The BBC main competitors are other British channels such as ITV and channel 4. These are there completers because they battle for rating of their shows. But because the BBC get their income from the government they do not need to worry as much unlike a channel like ITV. The main competitors that BBC would have would be their own channels because the more people watch their channel the more money will be given to them. For example if BBC One gets a thousand people watching a show and BBC Two has five hundred people watching a show then BBC one will get more money because they have a bigger audience. Competitors

The BBC has been broadcast in multiple countries other than Briton but their main audience are British people. Each of their channels and stations are aimed at a different audience. For example BBC One is for middle age people and family where as BBC Three is aimed for the younger audience who enjoys comedies. Also BBC four is aimed at the older audience who enjoy drama programs. The audience varies for the radio show as well. BBC radio 1 is aimed at younger audience around 16 to 25. Where as BBC radio 3 are aimed at older people around the age of 40 to 60. Audience
