Personality: know your self and understanding the others Is our behavior shaped by the situation we are in or by the type of person we are? In the September 11 tragedy, did people act the way they did because of the events surrounding them, or were their reactions more the result of the kind of people they were before the incident? For example, the 512 Wenchuan Earthquake… This is one of the enduring questions in psychology. The generally agreed-upon answer today is that both the situation and the person contribute to behavior. But, how the situation influenced our behavior, and how our behavior reflected our personal traits? Personality Psychology

Then What is Personality? Definition from Our Textbook Personality can be defined as consistent behavior patterns and intrapersonal processes originating within the individual. Unique, relatively consistent pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving Preferences – for how you handle situations, your sense of humor, or your expectations of others “You have a strong need for other people to like & admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity, which you have not turned to your advantage…disciplined & controlled on the outside, you tend to be worrisome & insecure inside…at times, you’re extraverted, affable, & sociable; at other times, you’re introverted, wary, & reserved”

Personality Defined Who I am Who you are: --Name, major, what is your personality Personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that is organized and relatively enduring and that influences his or her interactions with, and adaptations to, the environment (including the intrapsychic, physical, and social environment).

Overview of Syllabus Course objectives : The course objectives of Psychology of Personality and Personal Growth include: (a) understanding the basic concepts and principles of each theoretical perspective of personality (b) relating the personality theories to one's own development, characteristics, and behaviors, learning to use the basic methods of personality tests (c) learning to apply the theories to others' lives in order to better understand their personalities and experiences.
