2 Today’s Objectives: Identify, discuss and analyze the use of the persuasive/propaganda techniques in print advertising Demonstrate comprehension of persuasive concepts of attention- getting, clear statement of purpose, reasons, addressing counter-claims, and “call to action” by participating in a group activity to analyze three ads.

7 How are we influenced??? Let’s take a look at some persuasive/propaganda methods!

8 Persuasive Technique #1 The “Bandwagon” When one is urged to do or believe something because everyone else does. “Everyone’s doing it!”

9 The Bandwagon "All your neighbors are rushing down to Mistri Motors to take advantage of this year-end sale. You need to come, too!"

10 Persuasive Technique #2 The Testimonial When famous people endorse a product or idea

11 Persuasive Technique #3 Emotional Appeal Words or images that appeal to the audience’s positive and negative emotions/desires Ex: Success, fear, love, acceptance, wealth, health, beauty, happiness, prestige, intelligence…

13 Persuasive Technique #4 Plain Folks When ordinary people sell a message because they are like you and can be trusted.

15 Persuasive Technique #5 Snob Appeal This technique suggests that you can be like the expensively dressed, perfect people who use this product

16 Persuasive Technique #6 Common Sense Trying to persuade using everyday sense of good or bad / right versus wrong. Ex: No one wants stains on their shirts, so use “detergent A”

17 Persuasive Technique #7 Free or Bargain A speaker suggests that the public can get something for nothing or almost nothing Ex: For only 3 easy payments of $29.99, you can have ……

18 Persuasive Technique #8 Repetition The same idea or phrase is stated or written over and over again. Ex: Just Do It, Fresh and Tasty “800-588-2300…”

27 Today’s Objectives: Discuss Bias and propaganda and the various techniques advertisers use in different forms of advertising. Participate in station activities to review our skills in recognizing and using persuasive techniques. Reinforce existing vocabulary skills and learn new vocabulary associated with persuasive writing.

29 Station Directions You will be participating in 4 stations today. Each station requires you to do different things. Please have out a pen or pencil and your handout. All the number 1’s will start at station 1; 2’s to station 2…

30 Continued.. Station #1 This station features various advertisements. Identify the various persuasive techniques used for 4 ads. Record your findings on your sheets!! Station #2 This station is Vocab Quiz-Quiz-Trade with Unit 3 words. Get some Practice!! Write any words you need to focus on in the spot provided on the handout!!

31 And again… Station #3 This station has 4 Presidential campaign ads. You will watch two- they are in pairs- and fill out the questions on the handout. Station #4 At this station you will be creating your own advertising slogans based on the pictures provided. QUESTIONS????

38 Qualities of Good Advertising Gets the attention of the buyer. Clearly shows what is being sold. Gives reasons to buy product. States why product is better than the competition. Tells how to purchase the product. Qualities of Persuasive Writing Grabs the attention of the reader. Clearly states the argument. Gives reasons why the argument is correct. Addresses opposing arguments. Leaves the reader with a “call to action.”

39 Advertising Group Assignment Create an ad to get people to buy one of the following products. – A three-wheeled fuel efficient car – No carb, sugar-free, protein- enriched cereal for kids – Self-propelled schoolbag/ luggage –Other, as approved by teacher

40 Advertising Group Assignment Create a two-page magazine ad for your product and be sure that you: –get the attention of the reader, –clearly show what you are selling, –give reasons (3) to buy your product, –state why other products aren’t as good as yours, and –tell the readers what to do.
