August 10, 2015 Agenda: We will review the pre-assessment argument prompt. We will discuss how to approach an argument about judgement. You will review and make notes on your pre-assessment argument essay. You will engage in a judgment argument activity.
3
YOUR ESSAYS WERE LIKELY TO BE LESS THAN STELLAR. What does the word stellar mean? Informally it means outstanding or extraordinary. Do not berate yourselves. The prompt was not simple – nothing in life worth arguing about is!
4
Pre-assessment Writing Read the prompt Turn it into a question – what is the prompt REALLY asking you to argue? Take a position and make a CLAIM. Underline YOUR claim. Give reasons why your CLAIM is reasonable/worthy/believable Circle YOUR reasons.
5
Pre-Assessment Writing Reasons need evidence. How do you know what you claim? What can you share about the world around you that relates to your reasons? Why should the reader believe you – HOW DO YOU KNOW? Put a box around any evidence that supports your reasons.
6
Judgment Arguments We do it all the time – make complex judgments without much thought. Judgments are the “measuring stick” we use to hold people, groups, objects, or concepts against. Movie critics Advertisements (Coke vs. Pepsi) – quick poll -whose judgment is “right” ? Arguments of judgment are the basis of serious issues: We see the world based on what it is we have seen. Prejudice and intolerance Unexamined assumptions and beliefs Who is “right” ? https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/fuo/5140523413.html
