Tips for your portfolio Get organized by setting up your binder. Use tabs to separate sections (e.g., personal goals, professional development, committee work, planning and assessment, etc.) Keep a box or space handy to store items that you may want to include. Pencil in dates on the calendar to sort through and/or collect items.

Remember what makes a good reflection!! Choose the best one… “This week I have seen a lot of progress in the students’ behavior. They have gotten used to me being the teacher in the classroom and it was a good week behavior-wise. I was able to participate in an IEP meeting and also went to Family Literacy Night. I took over three of the four reading groups this week. My CT said I did a really good job, but told me I need more practice with using our reading program.” “This week I was better able to manage student behavior. I implemented a point system for on-task behavior during independent work time. Two students who had been unable to complete their reading response journal wrote two complete paragraphs and earned their chosen reward (e.g, iPad time) on 2/3 consecutive occasions. Feedback I received from my CT indicated I need to increase my pace using scripted lessons during direct instruction. I agree that my instruction is too slow and it causes students to lose their academic focus and engagement.”

Practicum Scenario: Balancing student teaching and the literacy work sample John is a student teacher in the resource room at Mountain Cliff Middle School who has been paired with Audrey, a CT with a caseload of 55 students. Audrey provides direct instruction for three periods of language arts per day and has responsibility for three paraprofessionals who help provide support to students in the general education classroom. She is also the Field Day Coordinator this school year, an annual school- wide event that requires extensive planning and coordination. John is required to complete a literacy work sample during his student teaching experience and is already feeling overwhelmed. In pairs, discuss how John can balance the demands and responsibilities of both student teaching and the literacy work sample.
