SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The Pumping solution is designed to offer the rural areas, water to use for domestic application 1 set-up will use 700-800 Wp of Solar power to run 1 HP of submersible pump at depth of 20-70 metre It will discharge 5000-8000 liter per day. It will also have automatic on/off mechanism to avoid water wastage once the tank is filled The system is a retrofit solution to the existing hand pump already installed Hence it will be a Dual pumping system where people can have water through hand pump at the absence of solar energy Solar Powered DRINKING WATER Pumping Solution 24

India Plans to Install 26 Million Solar-powered Water Pumps (Source: Times of India 20 Feb 2014 ) India’s government wants to replace 26 million groundwater pumps for irrigation with more efficient pumps that run on solar power, in an effort to relieve farmers of high costs of diesel fuel. The initiative is expected to require $US 1.6 billion in investment in the next five years just to switch out the first 200 000 pumps, according to Bloomberg. It's also very contentious—Indian farmers are currently drawing more water than is sustainable, removing about 212 million mega liters from the ground each year to irrigate about 35 million hectares. One of the risks of switching to solar pumps, however, is that farmers may use even more water than they currently do with expensive diesel generators. Some state governments in India are subsidizing most of the cost of the systems because it helps eliminate the billions of dollars in annual farm diesel subsidies that go to farmers. Mandates will require 75 percent of rural and 33 percent of urban telecom towers to run on renewables by 2020. Solar powered “water ATMs” are also bringing clean water to rural India. India has plans for a 4-gigawatt solar PV plant, which would nearly triple the country’s solar capacity and be the largest in the world. 7,540 solar powered farm pumps to be distributed in state ( Source: Times of India 25 Feb 2015 ) The state cabinet has given a go ahead for distribution of over 7540 solar powered agricultural pumps in the Maharashtra. NABARD to help set up 2,000 tubewells on solar energy ( Source: Tribun e 23 Feb 2015 ) To encourage the use of renewable energy in the state, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has decided to set up 2,000 tubewells based on solar energy. 6,500 solar streetlights; 1,950 solar water pumps installed in Punjab (Source: Times of India 30 July 2014 ) Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has successfully implemented Biogas Development & Solar Water Heating Programme under which 1.6 lakh biogas plants and 29 lakh liter per day solar water. Solar-powered pump promises to end farmers' irrigation woes (Source: The Economic Times 15 Mar 2015 ) Switching from use of conventional energy or diesel gen sets to solar power can free up as much as 18 per cent of the electricity that can be used for other purposes. As much as 18 per cent of the total electrical energy generated goes into agriculture. There are nine million diesel pump-sets in India. Even if 50 per cent of these are converted to solar powered pumps, it will save 25 billion litres of diesel per year. The implementation of the solar pump can improve agricultural productivity to at least two crops a year in most parts of the country. Solar Pumps: India's Potential to Link Electricity Access and Irrigation Needs? ( Source: The Energy Collective 26 Feb 2015 ) In India, over 50% of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector so there is an enormous opportunity for agricultural electricity needs, like the electricity needed to power irrigation pumps. Most Indian farmers typically rely on the monsoon for watering crops, however, irrigation can increase crop yields up to four times. But irrigation requires energy. Currently, it is estimated that 26 million diesel and electric pumps run on Indian farms, making them the dominant technology offerings today. DO’S & DONT’S DO’S & DONT’S for Solar Powered Pump Do’s Ensure the solar PV modules are installed in the shade free sun in a proper direction. All sources must be disconnected, when making connection to the controller to prevent shock and arc burn hazard. There must be no loose connection for safe and secure operation. Transportation protection cover or caps must be replaced by conduit fittings. Ensure the tap/paper is removed from the battery cell vent plug before connecting the battery. The solar PV modules are to be cleaned regularly to remove the dust. In case the system is not in use, ensure that the battery is regularly charged so that is in full charged condition. If the electrolyte level has gone down, ensure that the battery is fully topped up with distilled water. The electrolyte level conditions in the battery must be checked in 30 days. Ensure that the battery plates are always covered with electrolyte. Petroleum jelly (not grease) should be applied on the battery terminals to avoid corrosion of the terminals. Dont’s Do not use grease for applying to battery terminals. Do not use acid for topping up the battery. Do not clean the solar PV modules with acid/chemicals/detergent etc. Don’t temper with settings of Controller or the Solar Inverter. Overload protective accessories such as fuse, CB etc are not required in the solar array circuit. During solar array wiring avoid loop formation since it will help induced voltages in each size of the circuit to equalize and cancel each other out. 34
