Maths Paper 1 Arithmetic (20 minutes) Teachers can NOT read this paper with the children No equipment or displays can be used for this test Children can only have a pencil Does not have to be strictly timed – but shouldn’t really take more than 30 minutes. A big group of children struggled to finish in 30 minutes. Biggest errors have been in TU + TU or TU – TU. Fractions and division too!
3
Maths Paper 2 Reasoning Paper (30 minutes) Children can use equipment I can read the questions – can’t read mathematical words or numbers Again the paper is not timed strictly timed Errors mainly with problem solving Some children not reading key (bold words) carefully E.g. odd/even – lots got this question wrong Units of measurement – making mistakes
4
Spelling Missing words read by me Application of spelling rules! Plurals – ch, sh, zz words add es Words that end in y – change y to i and add es (custard pie) Not always using spelling strategies – break it down segment and sound out a syllable at a time Watch the news for controversy around spelling test!!news
5
Grammar Test (30 mins) I can read Errors around number of ticks – e.g. if question said tick one box (some made errors ticking more than one box) Identification of word class – practise games at home!games home Errors with use of comma (in a list) Understanding the term Proper Noun Tense work – particularly irregular past tense (take – took) Tense work irregular past tense
6
Reading Test Paper 1 – all reading in test material (30 mins) Paper 2 – Question booklet and Reading booklet (40 mins) My biggest worry! I can’t read any part of the test – but can encourage them to read the question to me and underline important words Comprehension practise needed! Biggest idea is to ONLY use facts from the text – some children think they know the answer When it asks to COPY words they must do that and not use a word they think makes sense or links
7
Writing (teacher assessment over the year) Lots of hoops to jump through Children must be showing evidence of joined handwriting to be SECURE and beyond Stage 2 Children must be using a range of co-ordinating and subordinating sentences Spelling to be stage 2 developing or secure Confidently using all 4 stages of sentence demarcation ( ! ?. / command, question, exclamation and statement) Use of descriptive writing Spelling (exception words), contractions and: +ment, +ful, +less and + ly!! (See next slide for words to be used in writing)
8
