11-6 Reaction Quotient Q And you
2
The reaction quotient Q is the same as the equilibrium K except that it uses initial concentrations instead of equilibrium concentrations. Q is used to determine whether the initial reaction conditions will proceed in the forward or reverse direction.
3
If Q < K then the reaction proceeds in the forward direction: products; reagents If Q > K then the reaction proceeds in reverse direction: products; reagents If Q = K then the reaction is at equilibrium!
4
N 2 O 4 (g) ↔ 2 NO 2 (g) K p = 11 (T = 373 K) If the initial pressures of N 2 O 4 and NO 2 are both 1.5 atm, which direction will the reaction proceed? Q = (P NO2 ) 2 / P N2O4 Q = (1.5 atm) 2 /1.5 atm = 1.5 atm 1.5 < 11 (Q < K) So the reaction will proceed!!!!!!!
