3 A UK registered charity and company ‘limited by guarantee’ (= owned by its members) Members in AGM elect the 12 non-executive Trustees - the Board meets 4-6 times a year Board supervises strategy, policy, resource deployment CEO runs the organisation between Board meetings, devises strategy, accounts to Board for progress against plans Staff team of 17 plus some outsourced functions Over 450 member centres Corporate structure

4 Over 600,000 students, worth around £1.5 billion in foreign earnings to UK Highly diverse sources – top 3 markets contribute only 27% of students Huge range of courses – students from age 5 to 80s, from ‘fun’ (English with whisky appreciation and golf for retired Japanese) to academic (boarding school preparation, foundation, pre-sessional, IELTS preparation), very specialised business/professional (English for international loss adjusting) Major feeder route into higher education and professional/vocational training Quality assurance – Accreditation UK/accredited by the British Council (~530 centres) UK’s ELT sector - overview

5 English UK collects detailed annual statistics on the UK’s ELT market Adult students = 79% of the market; ~ 6 weeks average length of stay Junior students = 21% of the market (seasonal fluctuations); ~ 3 weeks average length of stay ELT student weeks : 2011 = 2,534,580 V 2010 = 2,560,876 (i.e. 1% decrease) But grand total of 520, 219 students attended English UK member centres in 2011 ~ 14% increase on 2010 UK’s ELT sector by numbers

In order to join the scheme, agencies must: Complete a detailed business profile form Submit satisfactory references from 5 English UK member centres Have previously attended an English UK organised event Successfully complete the online briefing course Pay the subscription fee - £195 for 2 years English UK Partner Agency Scheme

18 Online partner agency briefing course Explains the benefits and responsibilities of becoming a partner agency and provides useful background information about studying in the UK, English UK, accreditation, and the UK visa system Unique access code for your agency – multiples members of staff may complete the course After registering, you will have 2 weeks to complete the course – you may login as many times as you wish during this period Quick review tests to aid you in your learning Final knowledge check – you will need to answer 80% of the questions correctly in order to pass.
