Treatment  Standard medical care  Complementary medicine is treatments that are used along with standard medical treatments but are not considered to be standard treatments. One example is using acupuncture to help lessen some side effects of cancer treatment.  Alternative medicine is treatments that are used instead of standard medical treatments. One example is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of anticancer drugs that are prescribed by an oncologist.

Why would people with cancer be interested in complementary and alternative methods? People with cancer might think about using alternative or complementary methods for a number of reasons: They’d like to relieve the side effects of mainstream cancer treatment without having to take more medicine They are seeking a less unpleasant treatment approach that might have fewer side effects They want to take an active role in improving their own health and wellness They prefer alternative theories of health and disease, as well as alternative treatments

Examples of complementary/alernative therapy  Acupuncture may help with nausea but does not treat the disease  Massage therapy may temporarily reduce pain

 Psychotherapy may reduce anxiety and improve quality of life as well as allow for improving patient moods  Some cannabinoids may stimulate appetite and reduce symptoms such as pain and nausea related to therapy, which helps reduce weight loss.

 Hypnosis and meditation may improve the quality of life of cancer patients  Music therapy eases cancer-related symptoms by helping with mood disturbances
