Shape up your artwork

All shapes are either GEOMETRIC or Organic. Rocks, puddles, flowers, shirts, houses, chairs and paintings are all shapes and forms. SHAPE and FORM are often used interchangeably in everyday language, but in ART they have very different meanings.

Is a two-dimensional area having length and width that is defined in some way. A shape may have an OUTLINE or a BOUNDARY around it. It may be a painted area of color. It may be a cut-out or cut paper as in a COLLAGE.

GEOMETRIC Precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas (circle, square, triangle). They are also variations or combinations of basic shapes. ORGANIC Irregular and uneven shapes. Their outlines may be curved, angular, or a combination of both. Often found in NATURE.

Geometric shapes are used for: DECORATION UNIFORMITY ORGANIZATION

Organic shapes are used for: SILHOUETTES OF LIVING THINGS (animals, people, flowers, trees, etc.)
