2 What is it? An action verb is a word that expresses action. It tells what the subject does or did. A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. It answers the questions what? or whom? after the verb. An indirect object is a noun or pronoun in the predicate that answer to whom? or for whom? or to what? After an action verb. An indirect always comes before the direct object.

3 Action Verbs Practice… Underline the action verbs in each sentence 1.Jose buys roses. 2.His grandfather showed him the beautiful rose bushes. 3.He planted the bush in the front yard. 4.Jose plays the trumpet. 5.Jose watches music concerts on television every Saturday.

4 Direct and Indirect Object Practice… Circle the action verb then underline each direct object and bracket [ ] each indirect object. 1.Mr. Wagner gave Jose some lessons. 2.She gave him her thanks. 3.Mr. Wagner bought his daughter a violin. 4.Jose handed Ms. Wagner a red rose. 5.Schools give music students excellent opportunities.
