A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. The most common type of pronouns are personal pronouns. Pronouns allow a writer to refer repeatedly to a specific noun without saying the word over and over again.

A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. A noun can be singular (name one) or plural (name more than one). Pronouns can be singular or plural, also.

A subject pronoun is used as the subject of a sentence. He is going to Tampa. We are leaving in ten minutes.

The puppy always chases him. Would Sandy like to come with us? An object pronoun is used after an action verb or in a prepositional phrase.

A possessive pronoun shows ownership. Samantha invited me to eat at her house. The red two wheeled bike is his.

Choose a piece of writing from your writer’s notebook. Search for and record 3 pronouns. Then, identify the type of pronoun (subject, object, possessive). Share your thinking with a partner.
