What does integrity have to do with academics? O Duh. O But more specifically, today I want to talk about the “P” word:

What is Plagiarism? Is it really a problem? O A recent survey of 43,000 public and private high school students found that: O 59% of all students admitted cheating on a test at least one time in the past year. 34% admitted cheating more than once. Why do students plagiarize? Because fear and chaos bring out the savage beast that lies within us all

Why do students plagiarize? They don’t intend to, but they don’t understand plagiarism.

What are some common forms of plagiarism? O Cutting and pasting: submitting another’s work, word for word, as your own O Mixing your own writing with cut-and-pasted sections from another source O Changing key words and phrases, but retaining the essential content, order, and sentence structure of the original source

How can I avoid plagiarism? O Plan, prepare, don’t procrastinate O Don’t bother with Sparknotes, etc. O When in doubt, ask your teacher

What happens if I am caught plagiarizing? You have initiated the process of withdrawal from the community!
