NULLIFICATION CRISIS

What was President Jackson’s reaction to South Carolina’s threat of nullification? He threatened to send in troops and crush South Carolina.

Nullification confrontation of 1832- 1833. What was it? South Carolina was angry about the tariff and said they would ignore it.

What did John C. Calhoun claim that states had a right to do to a law? He said they could cancel out laws from the national government.

What did the doctrine of nullification say? States could block or “nullify” laws from the national government that they didn’t like.

What two territories did it create? How would the issue of slavery be decided in those territories? It created territories called Kansas and Nebraska. Slavery would be determined by popular sovereignty, meaning the people living in those territories would vote on whether or not to have slavery. I would hope you got the first part of that answer right.

Why was the name “Bleeding Kansas” given to the Kansas territory? Pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers in Kansas soon became involved in a violent conflict.

What does the term “border ruffians” refer to in regards to Kansas? “Border ruffians” were pro-slavery people from Missouri who crossed the state border into Kansas and were often violent.

Which reform movement was John Brown a member of? Abolitionism.

What was his role in the Pottawatomie Massacre? John Brown and his sons brutally murdered several pro-slavery families.

How did John Brown die? He was hanged for attempting to lead a slave revolt.
