* Study Planning Template

Goal of this template Plan a systematic research study based on your Idea Proposal Assignment. This template will help you ensure that there is a logical flow before you start executing your study. 2 INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What you have done so far You have already described your idea in Pre-Workshop Assignment and the Idea Proposal Assignment. You have done a preliminary literature survey in the Idea Proposal Assignment to identify prior work. You have made an attempt to describe the procedure of your study to gather evidence for your idea. So far you have mostly used informal language, and 'thoughts' and 'feelings'. This was okay till now. Now, you need to add more details to your study and make it more precise. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

Approach Use this template to get your study into a logical sequence. There are 3 sections in this template: I.Setup the problem II.Explain your solution III.Defend your solution INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What are you supposed to do? There are instructions and points written in each slide to guide your thinking. Read these to answer the question posed. Limit your response to one slide per question unless otherwise specified Your colleague should be able to follow your study's logic by simply reading these slides The slides in Blue text are an illustrative example of what you need to do. Write bullets for each slide with a light orange/brown background, to answer the question posed as that slide's title. Write your response in the orange/brown box that is provided. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What are you supposed to do? Write your answers only in the orange slides. (Do not write anything on the all-white or blue slides) Then DELETE the Instructions slide (all white) and the Example slides (blue text). Submit the final ppt in moodle. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

Write your name and e-mail address NAME: _______________________ E-MAIL: ______________________ INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

I. Setup the problem INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

Why setup the problem? Recall Feb 2 – Novelty and Positioning You may have done some work. Merely describing it is not sufficient to make it into a research article. If you do not sell your problem well, the referee will not buy your solution. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

1. What is the problem you are addressing? Instructions: Briefly describe the problem you are addressing. Illustrate the problem with an example. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

1. What is the problem you are addressing? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

1. What is mental rotation (MR)? Illustrate MR with an example o Show who needs (uses) MR ability and for what purpose. Attempt examples from different areas. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

2. Why is your problem important? Instructions: In this slide write about “who requires your work”. Justify from literature, not just your “feelings”. See examples of published research studies shown in the slides of Session 1 on Feb 2. Note the call-outs that say : Importance of Problem. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

2. Why is your problem important? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

2. Why is MR ability important? 1) Who requires such abilities? For example, students of engineering drawing, and developers of 3D animations. 2) Why is it important to teach MR ability? For example, the skill cannot be automatically acquired, previous work has shown that many students do not have the skill. [**] INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3a. What prior work has been done? Instructions: You have already some work related to identifying prior work for your idea in your Idea Proposal Assignment. Recall, the questions you had answered: What are traditional ways to solve the problem? Is there a theoretical basis to solve the problem using my strategy (for example a learning theory basis)? What techniques have been tried empirically to solve the problem? Now you have to: Look for more related prior work Position your work more precisely and give detailed answers to the above questions. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3a. What prior work has been done? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3a. What are traditional ways to acquire and improve MR ability? What references are available to establish that MR ability can be acquired and improved? What sort of courses are there to acquire MR? What is done to “improve” MR ability? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3b. Analyze prior related work Instructions: You have already done some of this in answering Q5 in the Idea Planning Assignment. Now you have to add more details - more papers as well as more questions to analyze the papers. For example, add a question comparing the results of different papers. Make sure you report both positive and negative results. Add your analysis on why these differences might exist. Convert the existing question of “What does instructor do” into several questions: What is the setting (eg in-class or Moodle), What is the sample (what type of students), what is the instruction method (eg physical or computer-based), what is the duration of the treatment, and so on. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3b. Analyze prior related work INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3b. Analyze prior work on acquiring and improving MR ability DimensionWhat is done in Paper 1 (Jianping Yue) What is done in Paper 2 ( Khairul Anuar Samsudin & Azniah Ismail) What is done in Paper 3 (Khairulanuar, Ahmad Rafi, Abd Samad Hanif) Idea for my paper What exact problem(s) is being addressed To investigate the impact of replacing isometric drawings with more realistic 3D views in spatial visualization tests. The purpose of was to examine the effectiveness of using novel method of training namely the Computer-Based Multimedia Tutor (CBMT) in enhancing the MR, compared to conventional instructional approach. Reported findings of computerized Mental rotation (MR) and spatial visualization (SV) training outcomes and their impact on orthographic drawing performance. Improvement of spatial abilities using CBT Training transfer to the subject What the instructor doesProviding conventional and Computer Based Training (CBT) for: Purdue Spatial Visualization Test (Visualization by Rotations (PSVT-R) in isometric drawings), Giving students CBMT for 5 weeks, with 1.5hrs weekly. Giving students CBT for 8 weeks, with 2 hrs weekly Duration of the training is single 3- hour session Selection of visualization test What the students do Students divided in following groups: graphics classes, CAD classes, high school students, and a comparison group Students took both the PSVTR test. Students divided into Control & experimental group. Students took the pretest 5 weeks CBMT & then Posttest Students divided in 2 experimental groups and a control group. The first experimental group trained in an interaction-enabled condition, the second experimental group trained in an animation-enhanced condition and the control group trained using printed materials. Students took the Pretest; Training ; Posttest Selection of appropriate sample for the study. Designing specific training activities What educational theory is the strategy in the paper based on Integration of Computer based training Use of visualization which is realistic in nature In order to assess accurately students’ spatial visualization abilities as exercised day-to-day in the workplace, it is necessary to replace isometric drawings with more realistic pictorial views in spatial visualization tests. Integration of Computer based training Technology based training (CBT) Selection of appropriate training method, mainly CBT. What evidence is collected - give examples Test scores: In this study, all groups of students showed better performance on the spatial visualization test with realistic 3D views than on the conventional isometric visualization test. Pre-test & post-test scores of both groups. Accuracy and response time for the MR test. Pre-test & post-test scores of all three groups. Pretest / posttest scores are useful for quantitative data analysis How to get insight of students’ thinking process when they undergo training and solve the tests? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

4. What are the gaps in prior work? Instructions You have tried to identify gaps in your Idea Proposal Assignment. After working on the previous two slides, you have found more prior work and analyzed it in more detail. Now you need to bring out the gaps more strongly. Answer:  What are the problems in existing solutions?  Is there any gap which current solutions do not address?  How do you think your work can address the problems or gaps in existing work? Your answer must aim to meet the ‘Better’ criterion in the slide on ‘Explain the relation to other work’ (See slide in Session 3, Feb 2, repeated Session 4, Feb 9. Source: Mary Shaw, Writing Good Software Engineering Research Papers, ICSE 2003). INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

4. What are the gaps in prior work? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

4. What are the gaps in prior work? What are the problems in improving MR ability along traditional ways? Some points in this can be from your “feelings” What is your hope about attempting to improve MR ability using your way (Blender training)? Which of the above problems are you addressing? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

5. What is your research study question? Instructions Phrase your research study objective as questions at two levels – o First level should be a question in broad terms that will be interesting to the reader. o Second level should be one or more questions specific to the experiment being reported in your study Avoid phrasing the questions as sentences. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

5. What is your research study question? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

5. What is your problem? Broad-level: What impact does the use of CBT have on the spatial abilities of the learner? Specific-level: Q1: Does a 3-hour Blender training improve the MR ability of 1 st year engineering students? 3 parameters have been made specific: CBT → Blender; Spatial abilities → MR ability; Learner → 1 st year engg Q2: What skills from the Blender training do students apply while doing mental rotation? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

6. Check for consistency Instructions 1) Check whether the initial problem you intended to address (Section I, Step 1) addresses the questions you have stated (Section I; step 6). If not, make the two consistent. 2) Check whether the questions you have stated in step 6 are in sync with the points in step 2. If not, establish the importance and need of your work more strongly (on the basis of related work). INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

II. Explain your solution INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your solution approach? Instructions Describe your overall approach (Treatment) Ex:- 3-hour workshop with hands-on Blender Describe what you will write for the details You need NOT write the details here itself. Ex:- You can put points like “I will first show a figure of the workflow”, “Then I will put the table of the instruction schedule”, “Then I will write about which items address MR ability”. Add slides here to complete your description. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your solution approach? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

Why is your method likely to work? Instructions Defend your approach (Treatment) using logical arguments; Later you will defend it using data. You have to convince the referee: o Is this treatment even worth experimenting? Argue that the steps are: Sound (in some logical order) Complete (cover all aspects of your problem stmt) Necessary (directly target improvement of MR ability) Sufficient (no critical step has been omitted) You can add more slides here to complete your argument. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

Why is your method likely to work? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

3. Defend your solution INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your (experiment) method? Instructions Research Design What is your Research Design? Ex: single group pre-post Why is your Research Design suitable for your solution? Ex: We want to measure increase in MR due to Blender skills. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your (experiment) method? Research Design INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your (experiment) method? Instructions Sample What is your Sample? Ex: 1 st year engg students. How will you select your sample? (this is called sampling strategy) - Subjects chosen such that they all have taken a course in engineering drawing Why is your sample and your sampling strategy suitable? That is, argue how your study with the sample can be used to generalize towards the population identified in the broad-level question. Ex: All 1 st year engg students need MR abilities (connect to section I, step 2). INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your (experiment) method? Sample INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your experiment method? Instructions Procedure What is your Procedure? Describe Setup Treatment Sequence and duration of activities Stages of procedure (if any) How you did group assignment Give sufficient detail so that your experiment can be replicated. Ex: 3-hour hands-on workshop; Include schedule of workshop INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your experiment method? Procedure INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your experiment method? Instructions Instruments / Tools What are your Tools / Instruments? Ex: Vandenberg Spatial ability test (for Q1) and 3-point questionnaire (for Q2). Why are they suitable for your experiment? Ex: These tests are standard tests for measuring MR, have been used in prior work to measure MR. How robust are they? That is, what kind of reliability and validity tests can you show. Ex: VB spatial ability test has been used before; show evidence for validity and reliability. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What is your experiment method? Instruments / Tools INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

How do you plan to analyze your data? Instructions Think of which descriptive statistics : means, histograms, correlations - that you could to calculate to present the data in an organized manner. Ex: I will include a table showing means and SD; I will show a histogram of pre-test, post-test distributions; I will examine gains of low-med-high achievers; I will compare questionnaire responses of high-gain versus low-gain students. What analysis could you do to establish causality - draw inferences – to show evidence that your idea works. Ex: To determine if post-test distribution is different from pre- test, I will use effect-size, paired-sample t-test. INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

How do you plan to analyze your data? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What ethical guidelines will you follow for conducting research with human subjects? Instructions: Write what all you have to consider since you are conducting research with human subjects. For example: I will ask all participants to give consent to participate in my study. I will not share data with anyone unless they are directly concerned with my study (such as a co-author). (sample Informed Consent form uploaded on Moodle) INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY

What ethical guidelines will you follow for conducting research with human subjects? INTER DISCIPLINARY PROGRAM in EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, IIT BOMBAY
