Reverse Engineering & Innovation Mr. Geesey
2
Objectives At the end of this presentation you should be able to… Apply the Design Process to a Reverse Engineering Design Challenge. Think critically about a given design and how to improve it. Synthesize design information into a new invention or innovation.
3
-A series of steps through which anything can be designed, invented, or innovated. Design Process Review Define the Problem Research Ideation/ Sketches Generate Solutions Choose Best Solution Model/ Prototype Solution Testing/ Evaluatio n Present your Solution

What is Reverse Engineering? A detailed examination of a product in order to determine its construction and function. Done to produce an innovation on the product, usually at a retail or manufacturing cost savings. Goal is to simplify, reduce number of parts, and improve the function of a product while maintaining it intended purpose.
5
Innovation Example Turn & Talk: 5 minutes, What could we change, improve, innovate? Magnetic Paper Clip: 7 parts: -Upper & Lower gripper -Plastic grips 1 w/hole 1 w/o hole -Spring & Pin -Magnet
6
My Improvements Went from 7 parts to 5- Reduces manufacturing cost & number of parts to stock. Integrated rubber grips into the upper and lower grippers. Changed magnet to a more commonly available size.
7
Do you Agree of Disagree with the changes I chose to make? Why or Why not? What would you do differently? Remember there are many ways to solve a problem, some are better than others.
8
Review What is Reverse Engineering? How does it help us? What are some of the goals of reverse engineering?
