4 Ferdinand Marcos 1965-1986 Ferdinand Marcos was elected President of the Philippines in 1965. Unfortunately, his lead turned into somewhat of a dictatorship. Life for the Filipinos became extremely difficult under his rule. This is partly because Ferdinand Marcos and the First Lady, Imelda Marcos stole money from the treasury that should have gone to the Filipino people. Marcos was forced out of office by Corazon Aquino in 1986. The couple were offered exile in Hawaii by the United States, which they accepted. Ferdinand Marcos with First Lady Imelda Marcos

8 Imelda Marcos owned MANY shoes. She had 2,700 pairs or 5,400 shoes when she left the Philippines in 1986. “If Imelda Marcos changed her shoes three times a day, and never wore the same pair twice, it would take her more than two years and five months to work through her shoe supply--as it existed on the day she fled Manila.” (source 2)

9 While Imelda Marcos ran for president twice, has hopes to run for the mayor of Manila soon, and has published many books about her husband since his death in 1989 (kidney failure), she will not be most remembered for any of those things because…

11 Other Interesting Facts o All of Imelda Marcos’s shoes were size eight and a half. o “’They went into my closets looking for skeletons, but thank God, all they found were shoes, beautiful shoes,’ a smiling Mrs. Marcos said, wearing a pair of locally made silver shoes for the day.” (source 1) o "Filipinos don't wallow in what is miserable and ugly. They recycle the bad into things of beauty.“- Imelda Marcos o On Sandal Street and Slipper Street in the Marikina district in the Philippines, one may find 200,000 Filipinos making shoes.
