Measurement
2
In order to measure some characteristic of a person, place, or thing, we need two things: 1.An instrument to measure with 2.Units to measure by Measurement
3
Instruments ??? What are some instruments that can be used? ??? Are instruments only hand- held items?
4
Units of Measurement Because we are measuring something, we will be using numbers…which means we will be using which type of variables??? Quantitative
5
Measurements Must be Specific Just as it is important to you to find out what “kind” of A you got on a test or project, measurements of any kind must be just as specific.
6
CPS Example For example, the Current Population Survey (CPS), is a monthly survey which, among other things, asks a sampling of people about their employment status. It’s not just a yes or no question…
7
How are they measured? Are you employed? People who are on strike but expected to return to the same job are included in the “employed” category. Are you unemployed? People who are not working, but who are actively looking for work are “unemployed”. Are you in the labor force? People who are not working and have not looked for work in the last two weeks are considered “out of the labor force”.
8
What do you classify him as? Why?
9
Measurement Must be Valid In order to be a valid measurement, you must use an appropriate instrument and use appropriate units. To measure a person’s height, you need to use units such as inches, feet, centimeters, etc. and an instrument such as a meter stick or tape measure. What would be inappropriate instruments and units?
10
Question… What are some other valid examples of measurement with their instruments and units?
11
Valid or Invalid??
12
Groupwork #5 1. Make a list of instruments and units that colleges look for when evaluating applicants. 2. Make a list of instruments and units that employers look for when evaluating applicants. 3. Identify overlapping instruments and units.
