Feelings of physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion How it causes a decline in a person’s ability to experience joy or to feel and care for others Terms synonymous with Compassion Fatigue. What prolonged occurrence of the natural behaviors and emotions can cause A one-way street to hopelessness Preventable (Figley, 1995; Friedman, 2002)

19 Coping Styles Avoidance Style- rather than experiencing the emotions of the moment during a stressful event, these people go into task mode and start trying to figure out what to do, how to solve the problem. Ruminative Style- these are the people who feel the emotions of the event in the moment and then continue to ruminate one the event after it is over. Hypervigilant Style- This style goes into fight or flight mode, quickly processing all the information and then making a decision.

20 Avoidance Style Tend to be problem solvers Are often hit with the emotion of the event hours or even days later when they allow themselves to “feel” HOW YOU RECHARGE If you are this coping style you need to incorporate regular down time, free of work where you can process through your feelings.

21 Ruminative Style Tend to be creative and big picture thinkers Often “feel” the emotions of an event for long periods and obsess HOW YOU RECHARGE If you are this style you also need consistent down time but it needs to be focused away from the things that you ruminate on. Change the channel!

22 Hypervigilant Style Tend to be excellent decision makers and quick to action Have hypersensitive stress response HOW YOU RECHARGE You need exercise every day to help you keep your stress in check.
