2 2 Macomb Science Olympiad Overview of Science Olympiad It is an education program structured as a team competition – Captures the kind of interest, enthusiasm, and commitment for science that is typical of athletic programs Designed to increase interest in science, while strengthening problem solving and teamwork skills The Macomb tournament serves teams in Macomb and St. Clair counties Macomb Science Olympiad is celebrating its 32 nd year! Why you should have a team What is required to participate The season timeline What help will you can receive The “events” that make up the tournament Students: which events are the most interesting? Parents: how might you support the team? – Many event coaches are needed for a successful team – This is not a baby-sitting program – You can learn along with your student

4 4 Macomb Science Olympiad Why should my school have a Science Olympiad team? It builds skills in STEM Students can experience subjects beyond their grade level It promotes parent involvement It provides recognition for student achievement Why do students want a Science Olympiad team? To explore potential science-based careers To build a college-bound resume To earn scholarships to Macomb Community College We make science fun To build strong friendships on a team The tournament is exciting (3,000 people!) ElementarySecondary

5 5 Macomb Science Olympiad What is required to participate? Each school can have one team A Head Coach (provides organization & leadership) Up to 16 students can attend the main tournament, but more can be on the team $100 registration fee paid to Macomb Science Olympiad Event coaches are a great help (parents, teachers,…) Some events require support materials (additional $$) A successful team has Organization Accountability Enthusiasm Continuity from year to year

6 6 Macomb Science Olympiad Team Structure The Head coach recruits, selects, organizes and motivates the team The Head Coach be a teacher or parent Event coaches typically are parents, maybe teachers High parent involvement is common for successful teams Successful teams strive to compete in all events Teams which are just starting may want to focus on a few events in the first year Two students per event team (Reflection Relay requires 3) Students typically participate in 2 or 3 events Teams may bring up to 16 students to the main tournament Practice tournaments typically allow alternates to participate Head Coach Event Coach Student Alternate 16 events

7 7 Macomb Science Olympiad What help do teams get? MSO provides training and workshops for coaches and students, and in partnership with other local organizations – A workshops is available for new head coaches – An Event Coach training event is available to all the adults supporting your team, and includes information sessions for all events – Some workshops are targeted to specific events Community-sponsored workshops are common for wildlife, bugs, and rocks Look for several additional workshops in February Head Coach HandbookHandbook MSO publishes rules, recommended resources Mentoring from experienced coaches Monthly tips A injection of advice on what you, your event coaches and your students should be doing at the current point in the season Event FAQs Answers to questions about specific events which clarify the rules.

9 9 Macomb Science Olympiad Who pays for the program? Facilities are donated by Macomb Community College and other local organizations Teams pay about 10% of the cost Many great sponsors help pay for the cost of our program
