GOALS and OBJECTIVES GOAL Students will learn about different treatment options available for hearing impaired persons. OBJECTIVES TLW identify different technology options which can be used with hearing impaired people.( cognitive)

ASSISTIVE DEVICES Apart from hearing aids, there are other assistive devices that help people with hearing loss. There are two general categories of Assistive Listening devices such as a. Augmenting devices/systems b. Transforming devices/systems

ASSISTIVE DEVICES AUGMENTING DEVICES/SYSTEMS These devices amplify sound and increase signal to noise ratio. Examples of augmenting devices FM systems Infrared systems Induction loop system Audio-visual FM systems

ASSISTIVE DEVICES TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS These devices convert speech in to text. Examples of Transforming devices/systems Realtime captioning Face to face communication systems Telecommunication device for the deaf (TDD)

AUGMENTING DEVICES/SYSTEMS FM SYSTEMS Frequency Modulation systems use radio waves to transmit sound from the sound source to a receiver worn by a person who is hearing impaired. The FM system can be fit to behind-the-ear hearing aids with special snap-on boots that pick up sound directly from a microphone. The microphone can be set up in front of the person speaking or worn around the speaker’s neck. They are helpful to enhance signal to noise ratio and are portable and easy to take from one classroom to another classroom.

AUGMENTING DEVICES/SYSTEMS INFRARED SYTEMS These systems utilize light waves to transmit sound from the transmitter to a special light sensitive receiver. The signal can be broadcast to a whole room through speakers or a person can wear an individual receiver. They are often used in the home with TV sets. The benefit of these systems is that they only work in the room where the transmitter and receiver are located resulting in fewer issues with cross-over.

AUGMENTING DEVICES/SYSTEMS INDUCTION LOOP SYSTEM Induction loop system utilize electromagnetic energy to transmit the signal. These systems can cover a small area with a loop placed under a rug or permanently installed within walls or ceiling of large areas like theaters, churches and auditoriums. A Telecoil is needed within the hearing aids to use this system

AUGMENTING DEVICES/SYSTEMS AUDIO-VISUAL FM SYSTEMS They facilitate speech-reading for students who are oral-deaf or hard of hearing. Audisee is an good example of this device. The Audisee is composed of a dual transmitter worn on a speaker with a microphone for the FM component and camera for visual component. The voice and live images are transmitted wirelessly to the student with a monitor on their desk to see the teacher’s face and receiver to hear the voice.

TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS REAL TIME CAPTIONING Real time captioning provides a typewritten account of all verbal information presented within a lecture, meeting, discussion or presentation. A trained captionist will transcribe the words by using a keyboard, in to text displayed on a monitor, screen or laptop computer used by deaf students.

TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS Some of the examples of real time captioning devices are CART ( Communication Access Real Time Captioning) Provides a word-for-word transcription using a stenotype machine, laptop computer and real time software. CPRINT It was developed by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), a college of Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT) as a speech to text communication access system. This system condenses information using a meaning-for- meaning translation.

TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS REMOTE CAPTIONING The captionist will transmit the text to the consumer by using a modem, internet or some other data connection so that he need not be physically presented and the user can listen in using a cell phone or computer microphone.

TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS FACE TO FACE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS They provide assistance when short, one-on-one conversations are needed. These devices have two portable battery operated keyboards that have wireless connection that allow deaf people to communicate with teachers instantly through type written messages. UbiDUO is an example of such device.

TRANSFORMING DEVICES/SYSTEMS TELECOMMUNICATION DEVICE FOR THE DEAF (TDD) It is also known as teletype machine (TTY). The user can place phone calls using text through a regular phone line. It has a keyboard with a text screen. A user either needs to connect with another person that has a TDD or use a relay service that can convert the text in to voice for the hearing listener receiving the call. Different models are available with different options such as printers, answering machines and memory to save text or messages.
