3
What is PAOT?- (Participatory Action Oriented Training)
4
Why People Change Behaviors? People mentally want to do the good things. They wish to be praised and respected in front of others. People like to directly see and also touch new things rather than only hear about those.
5
Key Principles of PAOT Focusing on action, learning by doing “to do is to understand”.
6
Key Principles of PAOT (cont) Increasingly doing good or positive practices is always a good way to prevent bad or negative behaviors. Sharing good examples to everyone. Showing real models in community for people to see, to touch.
7
Where PAOT applied: Started in 1990 with the support of World Bread (in Can Tho and some provinces). At the present: in some more WASH projects of Can Tho, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Ninh Thuan ect.
8
Why do we select this model ? Suited with households in rural areas Simple tasks, suited with capacity of motivators Low cost and sustainable.
9
Previous Activities in Hoa Binh and Bac Kan Consultant supported the process of produce PAOT documents (e.g.HH checklist): Dec 2011 – Feb 2012 TOT training (Feb 2012) PAOT for motivators: Trainers conducted training courses for hygiene- sanitation motivators (Feb – April 2012) Motivators carried out HH meeting, HH visit. HH improved their WSS facilities
10
Some initial results Motivators are very active to change. HH checklists were appropriately hanged up to remind people to change.
11
Many HHs are Changing and WSS are Cleaner
12
Comments: Compare with previous communication model: PAOT gets more positive changes and more sustainable. Challenges in Hoa Binh and Bac Kan: – HHs is always fully supported by the project. – Motivator makes her/his models to show when carrying out HH group meeting.
13
Sharing the Challenges of PAOT in Ca Mau: Communication skills of motivators. Motivators record the changes and reporting
14
Sharing the challenges of PAOT in Soc Trang IEC documents complicated Do not use vertical system (Woman Union) Lacking of regular monitoring Mechanism of motivator’s record the change and reporting is not a system.
