An Abundance of Katherines Author: John Green Year of pub.: 2006 Genre: Young-adult Fiction

Exposition After high school graduation a boy maned Colin is dumbed by a girl named Katherine for the nineteenth time. He is devastated and doesn’t have anything else to do be sad at home. Colin doesn’t get why he’s always the one to get dumped so he insists his friend Hassan to come over for they can talk. Hassan starts by telling him that he has to get over this girl, and get out into the world. So he invites him to go on a road trip with him to forget about all his problems.

Rising Action Colin and Hassan go on the road trip and they get to a small town called Gutshot, where they stop to see the grave of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Their tour guide, Lindsey, is dating a guy named Colin which they think is a really weird coincidence. Then Lindsey’s mom, Hollis, offers the boys a job, interviewing people around town and they accept it. The boys interview people about the factory that Lindsey’s great grandpa started way back then.

Climax Colin desperately wants to matter, and he at least wants to make a huge discovery, like the eureka moment and be thought of as a genius. So he works on what he knows, math and relationships, he tries to figure a theorem that would explain relationships. Meanwhile Hassan is with his new girlfriend Katrina and Lindsey is with her boyfriend Colin.
5
Falling Action Lindsey, Colin, and Hassan discover many secrets when they team up to spy on Hollis, Lindsey’s mom. They find out that nobody is buying from her factory no more, but Hollis really wants people in the town to have jobs, so she’s working double-time to make sure she can keep the factory open. They are all shocked by the news but eventually, they make another shocking discovery. It turns out that the other guy named Colin and Katrina have been together so Linsey and Hassan break there relationship with them.

Resolution After all of the secrets they have found out Colin and Linsey grow closer and share their secrets with each other. Then later on Colin and Lindsey start dating. Colin uses his theorem to predict how long they’ll be together, and it comes out saying just four days. Just as he predicted, on the 4 th day he gets a note from Lindsey breaking up with him. But it turns out to be a big joke from Lindsey, and Colin finally realizes he can’t use a math problem to figure out his love life. With that, Colin, Linsey, and Hassan get in the car and just drive along the road to see where it takes them next.

Analysis Colin Singleton, a mild-mannered, former child prodigy, is the main character in the book, An Abundance of Katherines. Colin also has an extraordinary understanding for the principles of math, vocabulary and grammar; however, he lacks the ability to maintain a successful relationship. Throughout the story, Colin changes drastically from a young, devastated teen into a strong, confident man, with the ability to take on the world. Also for a while he was obsessed and would only date girls with the first name of Katherine. This is why Colin and his friend Hassan decided to go on a road trip to nowhere. They set out their exciting adventure and finally end up in Gutshot, Tennessee, in order to see the grave of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Towards the end of the story Colin slowly becomes attracted to Linsey and a romance soon blooms.

Evaluation John Green has many great books for teenagers to read all over the world. From all of the books he has published this might have not been my favorite book, but I really did enjoy reading it. I feel that many people could relate to Colin and this story in different ways. It also had a surprising ending to it, which I think is great because the novel started off sad and in the end it had a happier feeling to it. Overall I’m glad that Colin finally found true love in someone who becomes his best friend which is Lindsey.

Characters Colin Singleton: A former child prodigy who has dated nineteen girls by the name of Katherine, and every relationship ended poorly. His main goal is his need to be praised and recognized. Hassan Harbish: A Muslim that really is into religion, but chooses to shrug off his responsibilities. He is also best friends with Colin and Colin’s only real friend. Hassan is also the one that suggested Colin to go on the road trip that changes Colin’s life forever.
10
Symbols Lindsey’s cave: This is Lindsey’s top secret cave in the middle of the forest and she describes it as “my secret hideout.” She tells Colin about the cave and takes him there. The cave symbolizes privacy where Lindsey could be completely herself. Dingleberries: A word made up by Colin and Hassan, to be used as a code to let the other person know that they have crossed the line with something.

Figurative Language Personification “That smile could end wars and cure cancer.” pg.32 This quote is thought by Colin, when he first meets Lindsey and sees her smile that is described by him as big as a war and beautiful that it can even cure cancer. ► Simile “Well, it sounds like a raccoon clearing it’s throat.”pg.65 Lindsey is making fun of how Hassan talks when she tells him this because she is basically saying that his voice sounds really bad when he tries to speak the language of the Qur'an.
12
Diction 1. “Missing her kept him more awake than coffee.”(pg.15) This is a good use of diction because it shows how much Colin cared about the past Katherines he dated and how he has such a hard time dealing with breakups. 2. “The future is unpredictable.”(pg.213) In this example the author is trying to show that Colin’s theorems won’t always work and how you need to play life how it comes to you.
