Every year roughly 900,000 Americans die prematurely from the top five leading causes of death 20-40% could be prevented Are you in the high risk categories? Can you do something to change your fate?  HEART DISEASE  CANCER  UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES  CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE (STROKE)  CHRONIC LOWER RESPIRATORY DISEASES TOP 5 CAUSES:

4 What can you do to reduce your risk? QUIT SMOKING!!!!! Lose weight Eat healthy Exercise regularly See your doctor and take appropriate medications, and/or supplements. Many of these co- morbidities can be prevented or reduced by taking preventive care, eating right and exercising.  TOBACCO USE  HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE  HIGH CHOLESTEROL  TYPE 2 DIABETES  POOR DIET  OVERWEIGHT  LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HEART DISEASE RISKS Love your heart!

5 CANCER R ISKS Tobacco use Poor diet Lack of Physical Activity Overweight Sun Exposure Certain Hormones Alcohol Some viruses and bacteria Radiation exposure Chemical exposure What can you do to prevent it?  Quit smoking and all tobacco use  Eat healthy, non-processed, non- GMO whole foods.  Avoid excess sugar, alcohol and refined carbohydrates  Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always wear SPF 15 year round  Discuss hormone replacement therapy with your doctor  Limit unnecessary radiation exposure, including unnecessary diagnostic studies  Be aware of chemical exposures to carcinogens such as asbestos, formaldehyde, and BPA’s

7 HEMORRHAGIC VS. ISCHEMIC STROKE ISCHEMIC STROKE- a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain HEMORRHAGIC STROKE- a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA) or mini stroke- is caused by a temporary clot.

8 W HAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT A STROKE ? Control blood pressure Quit smoking if you smoke Prevent or treat Diabetes Screen/treat carotid stenosis or other arterial disease Screen/treat atrial fibrillation Control cholesterol Avoid foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol, as well as sodium if high blood pressure. Eat moderately, avoid excess calories Maintain healthy weight Exercise

9 CHRONIC LOWER RESPIRATORY DISEASES  CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE  EMPHYSEMA  CHRONIC BRONCHITIS  ASTHMA  LUNG CANCER  SLEEP APNEA  CYSTIC FIBROSIS COPD which is primarily caused by smoking causes the alveoli, found at the end of the bronchioles, to thicken and fill up with mucus and/or become damaged. This prevents the sacs from filling up with air and allowing normal oxygen exchange to the capillaries. 11 WHAT DOES WELLNESS MEAN TO YOU? We need to find what speaks to our lives? We should determine what makes us happy and what our futures will look like. We need to map our plans to get us to those goals Live, laugh and love Take care of ourselves, cause no one else will!!!
