1 Year 4 Parent Information Evening - Thursday 8 th October 2015 As God's family, we learn, love and laugh. Together: Love one another, forgive one another, work together, play together, worship together, be happy together. A warm welcome from Miss Dawes (Mrs Steele)

3 Outline of the Day 8:50 – 9:00: Register 9:00 - 10:00: Maths 10:00 – 10:25: Guided Reading 10:25 – 10:40: BREAK 10:40 – 11:00: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar 11:00 – 12:00: English 12:00 – 1:00: LUNCH 1:00 – 3:15: Afternoon Session (Including assembles on Wednesday and Friday at 2:45)

4 Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling Handwriting – not currently assessed under the national curriculum – is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy – working on presentation Spoken English (was Sp&L) has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught presenting skills Writing – plan, draft, edit Poetry – learning poems by heart English

5 By the age of nine, children are expected to know times tables up to 12x12 Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic Fluency, reasoning and solving (more investigating) Maths

6 What will your child be learning in Year 4? Our Creative Curriculum Topic for Autumn: The Ancient Civilisations (with an in-depth study of Ancient Egypt)

8 Effective Marking Fix-it time

9 Reading at Home Year 4 are expected to read for 10 mins each evening at home. Discuss book, ask them questions about what they are reading Please check your child’s reading diary. Listening to audio books together & discussing the story Reading to your child – still important! Visiting your local library In class, your child will be read with at least once a week to an adult. Guided reading as a group will also done once a week and consists of reading as a group with Miss Dawes/ Mrs Steele

10 PPA (Planning, Preparation & Assessment) This year the children will take part in Computing and P4C lessons with Mr Johnson. This year PPA will usually be on a Monday afternoon. French: French will be taught on a Tuesday afternoon by Mrs Grealis

11 Swimming Times Year 4 will be swimming from 5 th February 2016 – 29 th April 2016. Our swimming session is 1.45pm-2.15pm Swimming List *Swimming cap (not essential) *Long hair tied back (girls and boys) *No earrings *Boys must wear trunks (no baggy shorts) *Girls must wear a swimming costume (no two pieces) *Goggles may be worn if consent form completed * Towel and hair brush

12 What will your child be learning for the remainder of Year 4? Spring Term: The Iron Man Summer Term: Heroes/ Olympics

13 Homework Maths and English homework will be set on a THURSDAY and is due in on the following MONDAY English homework will vary. It may be grammar, spelling, comprehension or writing related. Maths homework will usually be linked to the topic we have covered that week and will be differentiated to suit the needs of individual groups of children. A homework record is kept so please send in a note if your child is unable to complete homework for a particular reason. Spellings and Times Tables Spellings and Times Tables will be given on Friday and will be tested the following Friday.

14 How can I help at home? - Learning spellings- meaning and context - Enjoying books/reading to your child/listening to your child read or discuss his/her book - Times tables, Apps, CDs -Help your child with their homework if they need it, make a note on the sheet. Encourage your child to present homework to a high standard - Visit your local library and read books around the topic -Access to the internet for research & educational sites -Encourage your child to be independent and take responsibility for their belongings!

15 House Points Each child has been sorted in a house -Matthew -Mark -Luke -John Staff have also been allocated in houses. House points are awarded for good behaviour, displaying good values and good work. They can be awarded by any teacher and children place their counter into their house pot.

16 Behaviour System Throughout school a behaviour system has been put in place. There are three stages: GREEN AMBER RED
