Coming in and out of School Doors open at 8:45 am and close at 8:55 am. Latecomers must be escorted to the office by a parent/carer to be signed in. Children will exit via the classroom door at 3pm. Please stand behind the red line when collecting your child.

Coming in and out of School A member of staff from Year 1 will be available from 8:45-8:55am to take any messages. Please arrange to speak to the teacher after school to discuss any issues or concerns.

What to Bring In cold/wet weathers, please ensure appropriate clothing is worn. Spare uniform (to be kept in school). All children will need a P.E kit (to be kept in school). Book bags to be brought every day.

Our Learning Environment During lessons, children will have the opportunity to work independently and with an adult in a focus group. Children will access the playground for outdoor learning.

What will we be learning this year? Autumn 1- Ourselves; Food and Senses In this topic we will cover; Our amazing bodies and the five senses. Foods from the UK. A study on the 4 countries of the UK. What it means to belong.

What will we be learning this year? Autumn 2- Toys In this topic we will cover; Historical toys Toys from the 21 st Century Fantasy stories about toys Information texts about toys

What will we be learning this year? Spring 1- Space Adventure In this topic we will cover; Fantasy stories. Non fiction information texts. Significant individuals e.g. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Micheal Collins.

What will we be learning this year? Spring 2- Journeys and Africa In this topic we will cover; Stories from other cultures about journeys Fantasy journeys Comparing a small area of the UK with Africa

What will we be learning this year? Summer 1- Changes In this topic we will cover; Changes to weather and environments. Changes to animals and plants. Comparison of a hot and a cold climate.

What will we be learning this year? Summer 2- Heroes and heroines In this topic we will cover; A range of individuals in our community that help us. Historical figures such as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. How to help each other.

Maths Maths is taught in line with the National Curriculum. Lesson structure Mental maths introduction followed by teaching and consolidation of new concepts. Smaller group work and practical activities to practise and consolidate skills.

Read Write Inc (Phonics) Children will be split into groups for focused phonics teaching. This teaching incorporates learning new sounds, reading and writing. Your child will bring home a reading book in line with the Read Write Inc scheme which should be kept in the book bag and returned to school each day.

Primary Talk Accreditation As a school, we are committed to raising the profile of communication and speaking and listening. Communication is a fundamental aspect of the curriculum and underpins all learning. We will be holding events, aimed at communication, throughout the year to really help everyone understand the key aspects and importance of communication. There will be opportunities for workshops, drop in sessions, competitions and we would love for both children and parents to get involved. Please help yourself to any leaflets and we will be sending out more information regarding this throughout the year. The Communication Team

Physical Education P.E. is taught every week The children will learn gymnastics, dance, athletics and games. Children should wear a P.E. kit, including plimsolls (no laces please).

Homework Maths - Math homework is given out on Friday and collected the following Friday Literacy -Weekly spellings are taught and given out on Monday. The children are tested on their spellings the following Monday -Reading books are given home, daily reading with your child is essential Topic - The children will have the opportunity to create a project each half term based on their topic.

Autumn Term and Spring Term Individual meetings with the class teacher to discuss current progress in Year 1. Maths workshop explaining methods taught in class Phonics screening check information meeting Summer Term Open evening following the end of year reports. This is an opportunity to discuss reports and look at the children’s work. Parent’s Meetings
