4 Graduation Requirements 22 total credits English: 4 credits Math: 4 credits Science: 3 credits Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry or Physics Social Studies: 3 credits World History, US History, Economics, Government Visual, Performing, Applied Arts (VPAA): 1 credit (list is available in registration packet) PE & Health: 1 credit Option 1: Ind. Wellness & Group Wellness Option 2: Either Wellness & PE Elective

5 Scheduling for 11th grade First week of February: classroom presentations on course selections out of U.S. History classes. What to look for when students come home after presentations: Handouts: registration packet, 11 th grade course selection sheet and scheduling card. More courses available than ever before including AP courses.

6 Advanced Placement Courses(A.P.) AP courses are college level curriculum taught in the high school. AP courses are very rigorous and require many hours of study & preparation outside of class each night. AP courses prepare students for the AP exam in May. Depending on how students score on the AP exam and what college they attend, students could possibly earn college credit or waive a course. Please consult with current teacher to make sure that your child is the right fit for the AP class. Please consult with the course description book to verify any pre-requisites for AP courses.

13 English Selections Option 1: (examples) Applications of Compositions & Myths Applications of Compositions & 20 th Century Lit Applications of Compositions & Strange & Mysterious Lit Applications of Compositions & Shakespeare Option 2: Elements of Compositions & Literature This course will give students more time to develop writing skills and complete assignments. Literary works will include high interest stories from all the literature courses. Option 3: AP Language & Composition

14 Math Selections Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 (or Algebra 2A/2B) Pre Calculus AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics Math related options for senior year.

15 Math Related Courses: Math Related Courses: There have been new state & district approved courses for senior year math classes (after completion of Algebra 2). These classes are considered math related and include: Accounting 1, 2, 3 & 4, Financial Math and Analysis, Personal Finance, Computer Programming 1 & 2 and AP Computer Science, Woodworking & Advanced Woodworking, AP Physics, Physics, Fundamentals of Physics, AP Chemistry, Chemistry, and Fund. Of Chem., and all CAD classes (Computer Aided Drafting).

21 High School Transcripts Credit is given at the end of every semester (every 20 weeks, 2 semesters each school year). Transcripts are used for college admissions, scholarship consideration and for some summer opportunities. Go to MyRCS under the grades tab to see your unofficial transcript!

22 Semester Grades 40% - Quarter 1 Grade 40% - Quarter 2 Grade 20% - Exam Grade = Final Semester Grade (Exams are Jan 25-27)

23 Semester grades get factored into your GPA Grade Point Average GPA is calculated 2 times a year: 1 st semester and 2 nd semester Letter grades are assigned points, points are totaled and divided by the number of total grades: A= 4.0, A- 3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-= 2.7. C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=.7 Only semester grades are on transcript, so colleges only see semester grades

26 New starting with Class of 2014: H.S. credit can be given for H.S. equivalent World Language and Math (starting with Algebra 1) taken during middle school. H.S. equivalent math courses taken in M.S. may be applied to the 4.0 credits required in mathematics and counted toward the minimum 22 credits to graduate. H.S. credit earned in M.S. (math and world languages) will NOT be calculated into the H.S. GPA.

27 Also New for our Class 2014 Academic Recognition has changed—no more Val’s and Sal’s Student with the highest GPA were designated Valedictorian. Student with second highest GPA were designated Salutatorian.

46 College Night Each year Rochester Community Schools hosts a College Night/Fair in the fall (October) All are welcome 90-100 colleges & universities attend Collect brochures, gather information and speak with university representatives In 2012 it will be held at Adams HS

47 College Rep Visits at SC Fall of junior year College reps will visit the school to provide presentations to groups of students who are interested in learning about their college Dates and times of visits are listed in counseling office Student sign up in the counseling They will receive a pass to attend the meeting

48 College Campus Visits Meet with an admission counselor Verify admission requirements Determine actual college costs Ask about financial aid opportunities Take a campus tour Investigate your interested academic program (s) Attend a class if available Talk with students and faculty Look for a list of suggested questions on the counseling website

49 College Applications Applications are sent to colleges starting September of senior year (less than 2 years from now-can you believe it?!?!) Students can start to write essays over the summer before senior year to take some load off Applications are done on-line Senior meeting within the first couple weeks of school to go over the process Scholarship search-check with universities and online FAFSA--Financial Aid Night during senior yr.

50 NCAA Eligibility Students interested in Division I or II college athletics need to make sure they meet eligibility requirements www.ncaa.orgwww.ncaa.org Core Courses NCAA Division I requires 16 core courses. This rule applies to any student first entering any Division I college or university on or after August 1, 2008. NCAA Division II requires 16 core courses (as of August 1, 2013).
