Properties of Rhombus, Rectangles, and Squares Chapter 6 Section 4

Objective Students will… Define and classify special types of parallelograms Use properties of diagonals of rhombuses and rectangles

Special Parallelograms Special parallelograms have certain properties and so does their diagonals. Remember: A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel.

Rhombus A parallelogram with four congruent sides. Think: A square tipped over

Rectangle A parallelogram with four right angles.

Square A parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right angles.

Theorem 6-13 If a parallelogram is a rhombus, then its diagonals are perpendicular. Diagonals intersect at a right angle.

Theorem 6-14 If a parallelogram is a rhombus, then each diagonal bisects a pair of opposite angles

Turn to page 377…. Look at Example 2 Try the “Got It” problem at the bottom.

Theorem 6-15 If a parallelogram is a rectangle, then its diagonals are congruent.

On page 378… Look at Problem 3 Try the “Got It” problem at the bottom.

Create a Venn Diagram With a partner… Create a Venn Diagram as a graphic organizer for special right triangles.

On page 379… Try problems #1-6 on your own.

Beginning on page 379… Complete problems #7-40 in your work groups.

Reflection 1. What are the three categories of special parallelograms? 2. What are the properties of the diagonals of a rectangle? A rhombus? 3. How might the properties you learned today help you to solve problems involving parallelograms?
