The Institute for Molecular Diversity & Drug Design (IMD 3 ) 15th Annual Symposium Dynamics of Ligands & Receptors in Metabolic Regulation Hank Wagner Conference Center at Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare Thomas Burris – Widely regarded investigator from The Scripps Research Institute, Tom graduated in chemistry magna cum laude, Southern Illinois University and received a Ph. D. degree in molecular biophysics, Florida State University. He then studied molecular endocrinology with Bert O’Malley at Baylor College of Medicine and molecular genetics with Ed McCabe at UCLA. His focus on nuclear receptor pharmacology, begun in the O’Malley lab, exploited this field with his innovative approaches. After a decade of drug discovery targeting nuclear receptors at Johnson & Johnson and Eli Lilly & Co, Tom returned to academia as Professor & Head, Nuclear Receptor Biol. Lab, Pennington Res Ctr, LSU in 2006 joining Scripps in 2008. He is a prolific scientist with frequent novel papers in Nature, Cell, ACS Chemical Biology & PNAS while serving on editorial boards for Molecular Pharmacology, JBC as well as for Molecular Endocrinology. Tomas Ganz – Professor of Medicine & Pathology at UCLA, Tom received a B.S. degree in Physics & M.D. at UCLA with a Ph. D. from Cal Tech. After a residency in Medicine at UCLA, he studied with Harvey Herschman. Tom’s major focus is the biological role of peptide mediators in innate immunity & iron metabolism. His inventive studies of the pathogenesis of anemia of inflammation and iron overload states, and the development of hepcidin agonists and antagonists are globally recognized. Tom has published > 250 articles & 30 chapters and served as Assoc. Editor of Blood, President, Intl Bioiron Soc and member of NIH Study Sections. Co-founder of Intrinsic LifeSciences & Merganser Biotech, focused on diagnostic and therapeutic applications of hepcidin, Tom received the Marcel Simon Award of the International Bioiron Society for the discovery of hepcidin. Distinguished Visiting Speakers: Michael Pennington – Current President & CEO of Peptides International, Mike received a Ph. D., University of Florida, then joined Schering-Plough in 1988. In late 1989, he joined Bachem Bioscience and rapidly rose to President and COO. There Tom built and directed an internationally recognized peptide chemistry team focused on complex peptides and toxins. He publishes articles frequently and collaborates extensively while maintaining an extramurally funded research program. Tom holds many patents and is a founder of Airmid, Inc, a biotech firm advancing his discoveries for autoimmune diseases. He is also an editor of Intl J Peptide Research & Therapeutics and Current Peptide and Protein Letters. Sham Kakar – Well respected investigator of peptide hormone-receptor protein interactions, Sham received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in Karnal, India & post- doctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine. After faculty appointments at UAB, he joined UofL where he is also in the Brown Cancer Center, CGeMM & IMD3. Sham’s group is recognized for cloning key genes and demonstrating their role in cancer. His research includes targeted therapy using nanotechnology to treat cancer and plasma metabolites to identify biomarkers for diagnosis. He launched a biotech company, Nanomark Therapeutics, to develop his ideas of targeted therapeutics and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ovarian Research.
