If you’re prepared: Just get your pet evacuation kit Put your pets on leashes or in carriers And go!

This step is very important because many pet owners do not know where to evacuate to during a natural disaster. #1: Check with Family & Friends Stay at a family member’s home? Or out-of-town friends? Get permission ahead of time.

#2: Check for Pet-Friendly Hotels Hotels will be a safe place too Look for number, size, or species restrictions Check pet fees Good Sources:  bringfido.com  tripwithpets.com

#3: Check with out-of-town vets, animal shelters & kennels Gather phone numbers in your relocation area Who does emergency boarding?

#4: Check with emergency management Emergency plans for owners and pets? Mississippi’s is MEMA. National is FEMA.

#5: Prepare an evacuation plan with family. Make an evacuation kit for your family Establish a meeting place Talking about emergency plans Make sure everyone can get emergency alert

#6: Create a buddy system with neighbors. Can friend or neighbor evacuate your pet if you are gone? Tell them where your evacuation kit is

This is to have stress-free pets. Stay Informed about weather  Know the type of threat  Be prepared for the unexpected.

Bring pets inside At first sign of bad weather Keep pets on leashes Pets will want to run Pets can get diseases from other pets

Check for bites and wounds Debris injuries or infections Call medical personnel

Avoid closeness with other animals Pets will stress or get diseases Wash your hands Before and after handling waste After handling food

Leave pets in a central room with no  Windows  Big furniture  Toxic plants. Make sure they have their kit with lots of food and water. I DO NOT SUGGEST THIS.

If it is not safe for you, it is NOT safe for your pet. Prepare for the worst. Follow evacuation instructions.

If you stay stressed, so will your pets. Do NOT leave your pets behind during an evacuation.

Plan to rescue neighbor’s pets Make sure friends/ family have pet kits. Let close ones evacuate to your house.
