16 www. pdst. ie Information Gap/writing activity: Simulate facebook/texting. Walk into classroom and write on the board ‘you will work in groups of 2/3 you will discuss the topic I will give you. You can interrupt your partner but only by writing. Try to avoid very long paragraphs and don’t make your partner wait too long while you write. Topics can range from le weekend passé to more abstract topics. Teacher can go around correcting. The silence is wonderful and they usually enjoy it. Can use smileys etc. Great to use on a Monday, before Christmas. SAMPLE ACTIVITIES

17 www. pdst. ie Give students different short texts to read and they make notes on the board to tell other students about the text - no words! It means they focus on meaning and not just copying out chunks of text. Can also be used get other students to identify the text. Comprehension

21 www. pdst. ie Postcards In groups ask students to draft a sentence. One might be about the weather, another a sentence using the past tense another the future etc. (useful for differentiation). When they have drafted the sentence they can move groups or cards and suggest corrections/revisions/improvements. Could also be used to draft paragraphs at senior cycle or openng/closing sentences. 22 www. pdst. ie During or at the end of a unit ask students to draw a happy / sad face to indicate how they feel they are doing. Instant feedback
