3 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Starter activity © Hodder & Stoughton Limited * Time: 15 mins * Think of the settings that you have worked in. List all the exercise opportunities that you have observed. Share your list with a partner – do they have similar opportunities on their list? Discuss whether you think that the children are getting enough exercise in their setting. Does the amount of exercise vary according to the setting – pre-school, nursery, primary school? Why might this be?

6 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity * Time: 15 mins * In small groups, list reasons why regular exercise is important for children and why they should have outdoor access. Refer to examples from placement. 7 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator * When you are planning an exercise activity for an outdoor space, you would need to consider the following: Children’s individual needs Learning outcomes (what you want the children to learn) – refer to the EYFS The children’s age and stage of development – is the activity age appropriate? How can outdoor provision provide for: * Challenging children? * Developing imaginations? * Providing choice? * Providing risk? * Ensuring safety? 2. 9 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator * Points to consider when implementing your activity: Is the activity you have planned age appropriate? Is it appealing to children, for example, is it fun? What will they learn from this? Are there any other related skills that they will learn, for example, social skills? Does the activity address risk and challenge? What resources do you need? 10 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Group activity * Time: 15 mins * Discuss what your ideal day in the setting would be like to support children’s exercise. Consider: How would you set it up to provide the best provision for outdoor exercise? What indoor opportunities for exercise would you include? Design a poster to show the rest of the class your indoor and outdoor ideas. 11 CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Reflection activity * Time: 15 mins Write a list of the activities on a typical day for your class/group at your setting. Highlight all the opportunities that the children have to exercise. What proportion of the day is spent following activities which provide exercise? Do you think there is a need for more opportunity to exercise? Write out a daily plan that shows an awareness of the need for children to exercise. Refer back to the notes that you made during the Classroom discussion activity. Research free-flow play.
