Bellwork Open the Ziplock bag on your desk and spread out the word strips inside. Place the words in a line on your desk in ALPHABETICAL (ABC) order.

Objectives Content: I can recognize and use the parts of a dictionary to help me understand word meanings. Language: I can take listen and take notes over the parts of a dictionary entry.

How is a Dictionary Organized? A dictionary is listed in alphabetical (abc) order!

Parts of a Dictionary Entry Guide words are found at the top of each page. They tell you the first and last word that is found on that page.

Parts of a Dictionary Entry Let’s pretend we are looking up the word, science. First we would turn to the S section. Which one of these pages would contain the word science ? The page with the guide words: stamp - summer Or the page with the guide words: sandwich - seventy

Parts of a Dictionary Guidewords ■Lets pretend that we are looking up another word. Let’s try to look up Pediatrician ■We have to begin by looking in the P section Which one of these pages would contain the word Pediatrician ? The page with the guidewords: Pea- Pedal The page with the guidewords: Peddler-Peep

Dictionary Vocabulary ■Headword- The word that I am looking up ■Pronunciation- How to say the word ■Part of Speech- HOW to use the word in a sentence ■Definition- the meaning of the word

Parts of a Dictionary Entry Vocabulary: Etymology (Origins)- this tells you the history of the word, and what language it came from. Synonyms or Syn- Words with the same meaning of the word. Antonyms or Ant- Words with the opposite meaning of the word.
