Bellwork 9/19/16: Name, period number, date! What would you do if you were locked inside your favorite store over night? Tell me the name of your favorite store and what you would do. For a stamp, you must have at least EIGHT sentences.

Bellwork 9/20/16: Name, period number, date! On your Cornell Notes, fill out the top with your name, class period, and date. For the topic/objective, write: To activate background knowledge about the Holocaust and use it to deepen our understanding of the graphic novel Maus. In the questions column, write the letters of the alphabet, one per line, all the way down the paper. Use the back too. A B C D etc. Write a word that has something to do with the Holocaust and/or World War II that begins with that letter. For example, for A, you might write Auschwitz, the name of the Nazi death camp located in Poland.

Introduction Maus What do you notice about the cover? Interpret its meaning. Read the inside cover and also the quote on p. 4. What is the story about? What are the plot and subplot? Read pp. 5-6. What does Artie’s father (Vladek) mean in the last two panels?

Bellwork 9/21/16: Name, period number, date! Read handout (Judy Blume). What do you think “intellectual freedom” is? Define it in your own words. Look at the list of banned books. Have you read any of them? Extra credit opportunity... For 2 nd quarter, if you read one of the books on the list, you will receive extra points on your IRB project.

SSR Please read your independent reading book for the remainder of the period. You will receive extra credit for having your book with you and for reading it quietly during SSR. This will be given in participation category.
