Year 3 and 4 – Lower Key Stage 2 Transition from Year 2 to Year 3 can be difficult for some children We aim to prepare them for moving to Upper Key Stage 2 by becoming more confident, independent learners.

The New National Curriculum Statutory from September 2014. Significant changes to the content of the curriculum and expectations of children. Many of our topics have changed, some things have been kept. Studying a modern foreign language now statutory.

What will we do in the Autumn term? English – Narrative, instructions, letter writing, explanation and poetry Maths – Place value, ordering numbers, addition, subtraction, mental methods, multiplication tables Topic – How can we rediscover the wonders of Ancient Egypt? What makes the Earth angry? Science – How is the sound One Direction make enjoyed by so many? What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed? Computing – Using the Internet, communication, digital media (animation, video and sound) Art/DT - Can you make a sarcophagus? Can you design and make a volcano? Music - Rhythm and pulse, Egyptian songs P.E. - Hockey, dance, gymnastics, swimming French - Greetings, numbers, classroom instructions, colours, fruits, days of the week and months of the year.

Handwriting A handwriting pen and a pen license are awarded to children who develop and use a clear, joined and attractive handwriting style, during Year 3 or Year 4. Letters should be: Correctly formed; Joined according to the school handwriting policy; A uniform size.

Maths Number – place value, rounding and ordering numbers, the four operations, fractions Measurement – area, perimeter, time, length, mass, capacity Geometry – properties of shapes, position and direction Statistics – handling data and analysing it We’ve always done these, they were just called different names! The objectives may have also been in different year groups.

Mathletics All children have a username and password Please encourage your child to go on this as often as possible.

Homework Spellings – Given out and tested the following week. Reading - Every day, with an adult at least once a week to discuss the book and try to achieve their target. Maths - Mathletics as often as possible, Times Table Tower, Abacus assigned tasks. Learning Log – every half term

P.E. Hockey Dance, gymnastics Swimming for Year 4 Kit – Both indoor and outdoor kit to be brought in on Monday, take home Friday.

Assessment in Year 3/4 Assessment is an on-going process in all subject areas; Written assessments take place every half term for Literacy and for Numeracy. These assessments, together with the Teacher Assessment, enable teaching and learning to be more focussed.
