Use what you know… You have a solution with an unknown concentration You will react it with another solution of known concentration Once you know the volume of ‘known’ used, you can work out the moles of ’known’ used You can then work out moles of ‘unknown’ using the reaction equation Use the moles of ‘unknown’ + volume of ‘unknown’ to work out concentration

Example 1 Calculate the concentration of a solution of NaOH given that 25.00 cm 3 of it required 18.80 cm 3 of 0.0500 mol dm -3 H 2 SO 4 in order to be neutralised. H 2 SO 4 + 2 NaOH Na 2 SO 4 + 2 H 2 O

Example 2 Calculate what volume of 0.05 mol dm -3 KOH is required to neutralise 25.00 cm 3 of 0.0150 mol dm -3 HNO 3. HNO 3 + KOH KNO 3 + H 2 O
