2 Tonight’s Focus: 1.Why does Jesuit High School have an Immersion program? 2.Who are we sharing life with? 3.How do students apply? 4.What is the level of commitment?

3 Why do Jesuit institutions believe so strongly in Immersion programs? 1.To take a deeper look at unjust realities, and question those injustices. 2.To build direct relationships with those we meet, striving to see each person’s God given human dignity. 3.To hear God’s personal call towards active participation in social change and live a life that reflects that calling.

4 Who are we sharing life with? With people experiencing homelessness Or severe economic hardship Sacramento, San Francisco, South Bay Area, Los Angeles

5 Who are we sharing life with? With people experiencing developmental disabilities Portland & Chiapas

6 Who are we sharing life with? Doing physical labor/home repair in underserved communities New Orleans, Tijuana, West Virginia, Kansas City

7 Who are we sharing life with? With people experiencing extreme poverty broad Tijuana, Chiapas, Guatemala, KINO Border Initiative

8 Who are we sharing life with? Catholic Community Service-Retreat (With a focus on simple living, helping local underserved communities, and respect for the Earth) Kansas City (Jerusalem Farm) & West Virginia (Nazareth Farm)

9 Who are we sharing life with? With people experiencing immigration KINO Border Initiative: Nogales, Arizona & Tijuana

10 How do students apply? Go to the Christian Service Immersion page on the JHS website 1.Fill-out the Online Immersion Application, this includes: Student essay responses, selecting service preferences, making $100 online deposit, signing an agreement of understanding 2.Print out the recommendation request slips and directly give to two faculty/staff 3.Mrs. Anderson will send you an Interview time via your student email address (Interviews run for about three weeks starting on Oct. 24) DEADLINE IS VERY FIRM AT NO LATER THAN 9:45 AM on Friday, Oct. 21

12 What is the commitment level of being an Immersion participant? Completing an Immersion fulfills the senior service graduation requirement. A grade will be given at the end of summer. TBD January Parent, Student, Trip Leader Evening Meeting Wednesday, February 15 - Team Meeting during Collaboration Period Wednesday, March 1 - Minimum of $300 in Donations is Due Thurs., March 9: Mandatory Day of Training, 9am-3pm (No School this Day) Wednesday, May 3: Class Mass & Service Commissioning in the Chapel Immersion Trip (from the time the trip begins until it ends, student must be present to the entire experience) Two weeks after student has returned from his Immersion the final essay and advocacy project are due

13 Commitment, bottom line … For the strength of each team, For each participant to get the most out of their own experience (from the pre-departure stage, Immersion stage, to final advocacy project stage) WE NEED EACH PARTICIPANT ALL IN.

14 Frequently Asked Questions? What’s a typical day like on an Immersion? Is there financial aid available for these trips? How are students placed on an Immersion team? Will Mrs. Anderson accept the application after 9:45 am on Friday, Oct. 21? Should students wait to the last minute to complete the application?

15 Frequently Asked Questions? Why do we raise $300 in addition to the cost to go on the trip? What happens if a student misses his scheduled Immersion interview time? Can a student miss any part of his Immersion trip? When will students find out if they have been placed on an Immersion team or waitlisted?
