Formats App-based Such as.ibooks for Apple’s iBooks app or.kf8 for Kindle app.epub (electronic publication) is an e-book file format that can be downloaded and read on computers, smartphones, tablets, and e- readers ePub is a nice format for compatibility, but loss of advanced e-book functions like multi- touch for iBooks will occur Browser-based Access e-book through a browser; a code or username / password is entered to access it Still need Internet every time the e-book is accessed More like a website than an e-book May require frequent browser maintenance to stay functioning Consider your platform, your student population, and your resources. Start with small successes.

Heads-up! Apple: VPP- uses redeem codes in the iBooks Store, or pushed to devices through a management system. iBook is tied to that Apple ID; computer must be authorized with that Apple ID. Large file sizes- develop download policy. Ask IT Dept. about the new Apple School Manager and consider Apple Classroom if your devices/ setup qualifies. Local Server support for large file network downloads; ask IT. Be aware of download size; some e-books can download by chapter Renting vs buying e-books; the financial pieces: working with the business office, students on financial aid Reading on a laptop vs a reader; 2:1? Note-taking while reading e-text Know your school’s policies (or help draft them), work closely with IT, learn the lingo.
