Objectives Explain what it means when an instructor receives an accommodation letter from the ASC. Identify the responsibilities of the student, instructor, and ASC staff in the implementation of accommodations. Describe how various accommodations are implemented.

What does it mean when you receive a blue envelope from the ASC? There is a student (or students) in one of your courses who received academic accommodations due to a disability. If your class is online, then you will receive an email notification instead of a blue envelope. The student has completed the official process to request accommodations and the accommodations listed have been approved by the disability director.

What is the official process? The student discloses to the ASC that they have a disability The student completes an Intake Form The student provides the ASC with documentation of their disability and its impact on the learning environment The student meets with Marilyn or Susan to discuss accommodations Susan notifies the faculty of what accommodations the student qualifies for See Disability Services Checklist – Disability Services Checklist.pdf Disability Services Checklist.pdf

Your name The student’s name Course name & section number List of the accommodations How the accommodations will be implemented

Accommodations Disability accommodations are arranged to provide ‘access’ to college courses and activities and are meant to provide a level playing field so students with disabilities have the same opportunities as non-disabled students. They are in no way meant to provide preferential treatment or lower essential course standards.

Instructor Notes – Let ASC staff know how you will be providing the student with notes, i.e. posted on D2L, emailed to student, etc. LiveScribe SmartPen – No responsibility for the instructor other than being aware that the student will be using a special pen and notebook and will be audio recording the class.

Instructor’s Responsibility

Student Responsibilities 1. I am responsible to schedule a time to take my tests in the ASC prior to the test date in order to ensure that a room is available so I can utilize my testing accommodations. If I do not schedule an appointment, there is no guarantee that space will be available. 2. Tests must be taken on the same test date as the class, unless the instructor has given permission for an alternative date. Tests for evening/Saturday classes must be arranged during ASC hours. 3. ASC staff will monitor test time allowed, including extended test time, and will notify me of the time I must stop and turn in the test. 4. Cell phones, computers, tablets, electronic devices, backpacks, purses, bags, hats and other personal belongings are not allowed in the testing rooms. These can be stored in the designated storage area near the front desk. 5. Food and beverages are not allowed in the testing rooms unless it is part of your accommodation. 6. Only items designated by the instructor are permitted in the testing rooms. Any scratch paper used during testing must be turned in with the test. 7. If I am caught using unauthorized material (notes, cell phone, computer, etc.), I understand that my testing session will be terminated immediately, the test will be collected, a copy of the unauthorized material will be made, and the instructor will be notified. 8. If I am unable to keep my testing appointment, I must call the ASC (389-7222 or 332-5847) to cancel my appointment. The instructor will decide if I am allowed to reschedule the test. 9. I understand that I must request test accommodation services prior to the beginning of each semester.
