Philosophy The North Allegheny Mathematics Department Philosophy is based on the content of the NCTM Standards and the PA Core Standards. The following are the Standards for Mathematical Practice: 1.Make sense of complex problems and persevere in solving them. 2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4.Model with mathematics. 5.Use appropriate tools strategically. 6.Attend to precision. 7.Look for and make use of structure. 8.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

What is inquiry-based learning? “…an approach to teaching and learning that places students’ questions, ideas, and observations at the center of the learning experience. Educators play an active role throughout the process by establishing a culture where ideas are respectfully challenged, tested, re-defined, and viewed as improvable, moving children from a position of wondering to a position of enacted understanding and further questioning” (Scardamalia).

Textbook Adoption Reasons to adopt new textbook series: Go Math! K-5 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt All lesson are more inquiry-based Extensive online resources and blended learning Big Ideas Math 6-8 Big Ideas Learning Includes inquiry-based and traditional lessons Need to determine based way to deliver each lesson Extensive online resources and blended learning

Math Course Pathway Changes Rename the classification of level placements at the elementary level (A 2, A1, A2) to correspond to the level placements at the middle and high school level (M4, M3, M2). Through survey data, we found that the current naming convention confused parents.
