CIRCULATORY SYSTEM GATE 2016 CHAPTER 37

COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Heart – The pump Blood – The fluid Blood Vessels – The tubes Arteries, capillaries and Veins

THE HEART Human heart – four chambered Right side is Pulmonary (lung) circulation Atrium receives blood from the body and ventricle pumps it to the lungs

Left Side – Receives blood from the lungs and pumps to the body (systemic circulation) Blood is kept from back-flowing by valves

FISH HEART Is Two chambered and pumps to the gills and then out to the body.

BLOOD VESSELS Arteries carry blood away from the heart. High Pressure. Capillaries are so small that blood vessels pass single file through them. This is where gasses, nutrients and waste products are exchanged. Veins return blood to the heart. Low pressure. Muscles help the veins return blood to the heart.

BLOOD Plasma Humans 4-6 liters of blood. About 8% of body mass. Plasma is the liquid part of blood. 90% water and 10% dissolved salts, gasses, nutrients and enzymes

BLOOD CELLS Red Blood Cells White blood Cells (WBC) Platelets

RED BLOOD CELLS Erythrocytes – transport oxygen to cells of the body Get color from hemoglobin – contains iron Produced in the bone marrow Lose their nucleus Last about 120 days

WHITE BLOOD CELLS (WBC) Called leukocytes (leuko – white) No hemoglobin Produced in bone marrow Guard against infection, fight parasites and attack bacteria Many types of WBC’s

PLATELETS Blood clotting is accomplished by plasms membranes and blood platelets Large cells in the marrow that break into many small pieces Become sticky at the site of a wound Chemical reactions create filaments that aide in clotting

HOMEOSTASIS Circulatory system works with Respiratory system – Gas exchange Digestive system – Nutrients to cells Excretory system – waste products form cells Immune system – fight off foreign invaders (pathogens)
