Reparative experiences with teachers help children recover from the effects of violence and trauma Teachers help restore a child’s sense of hope and purposefulness. Positive relationships with teachers give children a second chance– a second chance to experience the coregulation necessary to develop self-regulation.

It is necessary for the health of the child and teacher. Exposure to violence or relational trauma causes children to repeatedly reenact past traumatic experiences with teachers and other caring adults. Model emotional regulation and control as opposed to mirroring the children’s behavior.

You know that trauma causes changes in children’s cognitive understanding of themselves, others, and their environment. Working with traumatized children can change a teacher’s perception of him- or herself and the children in the classroom

Teachers are often the first, and sometimes the only, adults to witness children when children are stressed or in danger. Acknowledge difficulty of child’s position without get in emotionally caught up in situation. Work on empathy. Stay emotionally connected while maintaining objectivity.
