Enlightenment Thinkers John Locke Wrote: Two Treatises of Government (1689) Main Ideas: We are born with rights that cannot be taken away: life, liberty, and property (natural rights). If a government does not protect these rights, its citizens can overthrow it.

Enlightenment Thinkers Baron de Montesquieu: Wrote The Spirit of the Laws Main Ideas: Government’s power should be separated to protect people’s rights (separation of powers). Each branch of government should check the other branches’ power (checks and balances).

Enlightenment Thinkers Jean-Jacques Rousseau: Wrote: The Social Contract (1762) Main Ideas: People are basically good, but corrupted by the evils of society. Society needs an elected government (democracy) The community should be placed above individuals
