Poetry Terms In your spiral notebook on page 42-43, label the pages Literary Terms Bank pg.3-4. Write each poetry term and as many definitions as you can remember. Define them in your own words! You have 15 minutes!! For the words you DO NOT remember, use the Glossary of Literary Terms in your literature book p. 1342-1365. You will not be able to find apostrophe; ask me if you need help with the definition!

Poetry Terms 1. onomatopoeia: words that imitate sounds 2. rhythm: the pattern or flow of words 3. tone: the writer’s attitude toward a subject; how it sounds 4. imagery: descriptive words and phrases that paint a picture in your head 5. allusion: a direct reference to another person, place, event, or literary work

Poetry Terms 6. apostrophe: addressing an object, person, or idea who is either dead or absent 7. quatrains: a four-line stanza 8. simile: comparison of two things using like or as 9. metaphor: a comparison of two things not using like or as; state of being 10. extended metaphor: a metaphor carried throughout a paragraph, stanza, or entire poem 11. personification: giving non-human things human characteristics

Poetry Terms On a separate sheet of paper, write one example of the poetic terms you just reviewed. Work with a partner or partners! You DO NOT need to provide examples for: extended metaphor apostrophe Turn it in when done!
