Release Base Papers Making and Properties
Silicone hold out is obtained through chemical treatment of the surface and subsequent off-line Supercalendering The pressure and friction of SuperCalender cylinders delivers high density, smoothness and transparency to the paper Silca Supercalendered base papers (glassines) Silco Clay-Coated base papers Silicone hold out is obtained through the application of one or more coating layers Coating is applied still on the Paper Machine (on-line coating) The paper results opaque, bulky and has good lay-flat

1 Release Base Papers Making and Properties
Silca Supercalendered base papers (glassines) Refining of cellulose fibers is the first important step of glassine making This process developes many fibrils from the cellulose fibres, increasing the ability to create bonds among them, and increasing the number of those bonds. This will result in a higher resistance (tensile strength) of the paper and in a lower porosity of the paper surface 1

2 Release Base Papers Making and Properties
Silca Supercalendered base papers (glassines) 2 Surface Treatment through the application of chemical additives increases the surface hold-out and the anchorage of silicone. the treatment is applied on the paper machine, when the paper web runs throught a Size-Press

3 Release Base Papers Making and Properties
Silca Supercalendered base papers (glassines) 3 Supercalendering is the most important process influencing the characteristics of glassine It is an off-line process Paper is first heavily re-moisturised Then it goes through couples of high temperature metal and rubber cilinders Pressure, Temperature and Friction of the cilinders produce smoothness of the surface, high density and high transparency

Applications needing a Supercalendered Base Paper
Primary Labels of food and beverages, cosmetics and other household products are carried in reels through printing, cutting and dispensing, by a silicone coated release liner. Requirements: high smoothness for silicone hold-out; high density and even thickness for accurate die cut; high transparency for photocell detection Silca Label A range of supercalendered base papers for silicone coating designed to meet those specific needs. · 57 – 80 gsm · Suitable for coating with all silicone systems (solvent, solvent-free, Emulsion, UV)

Die Cutting Target: cut the label and the adhesive without cutting or damaging the silicone coated liner. Dies are set upon the expected thickness of the liner die Requirements for the liner: Even thickness , low std deviation High density (ability to be compressed ) Ideal density between 1.10 – 1.15 Die cutting of film labels more demanding, as they need an heavier pressure Label + adhesive Silicone coated liner

Label Dispensing Target: automatically remove the label from the silicone coated liner and apply it to the product or container. Requirements for the liner: Resistance, tensile strength: it has to take most of the strain of the applicator procedure The tension of the web changes continuously / stop & go process A problem or a break bring the whole fitting and labelling to a stand still. Possible cause for breaks: silicone voids, impurities Transparency: the labels are detected by a photocell that needs to read through the liner photocell labels receptor silicone coated liner

2 Release Base Papers Making and Properties
Silco Clay coated base papers Back side is designed according to the converting process (target = layflat): no coating = easier remoisturing ; coating = smaller sensitiveness to changes of humidity in the environment 2 Specific coating 100% designed for silicone application. All chemical used are tested and do not interfere with the silicone curing. Silicone hold out is excellent because of double coating Double coating:

Large sheets Comparison between PE Coated liners and Clay Coated liners : The main reason of using a PE Coated liner is the dimensional stability of this product. The polycoating on the backside gives a very good dimensionnal stability But back side treatment is now available also on Clay Coated liners in addition to that, PE Coated liners also have several disadvantages: Thermal sensitivity: limit in curing temperature Silicone coverage not measurable: risk of uneven coating Poor silicone anchorage Low density: poor die-cutting, risk of delamination during label peeling Static Loading
