Generation 3 1985-1990 (Gameboy mainstream until 1998) Utilized 8 bit processors NES took over living rooms along with Super Mario Bros in 1985 Nintendo gameboy was released in 1989 Was an 8-bit handheld system with black and white graphics Nintendo dominated Atari’s Lynx and 7800

Generation 4 1987-1996 Introduced 16-Bit processors SNES released in 1992 Sega Genesis released in 1988, CD addon in 1992. CD addons allowed full motion video and more storage for games.

Generation 5 1993-2001 Used 32-Bit and 64-Bit processors Sony Playstation used 32-Bit processor and CD-ROM drive Nintendo 64 used a 64-Bit processor and cartridges Goldeneye 007 and Doom popularized first person shooters and multiplayer gaming

Generation 6 1998-2008 This time was known as the 128-bit era. The Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gamecube and the Xbox were introduced at this time. Halo Combat Evolved made FPS games feel natural on a console.

Generation 7 2004-2015 Nintendo DS had two screens to allow for unique gameplay PSP attempted to bring console quality to handhelds XBox 360 popularized online multiplayer with powerful hardware PS3 used a Blu-Ray player and was similar to the XBox 360 Wii used motion controls and Gamecube hardware Sony and Microsoft later came out with the PS Move and Kinect

Generation 8 2012-Now Wii U utilized a second screen controller that served as a gimmick Playstation 4 and Xbox One were more powerful and used more traditional dual analog stick controllers Nintendo 3DS gave a 3D screen to the Nintendo DS with more powerful hardware Playstation Vita gave a second analog stick, touch screen, touch pad, and hardware upgrade to the PSP
