7 Staggered entry…What is it? Why do it?
Staggered Entry Week: August 29th-Sept. 2nd 2016 Your child will come to school only one day during the first week of school (this day will be assigned to you) Small groups each day allows us to get to know your child, introduce new activities, centers and routines, and complete assessments (KEA) in order to plan instruction Kindergarten Entry Assessment-measures skills in literacy, math, oral language, social development, gross/fine motor This is NOT a “test”!

Letter in the mail with your assigned day Check in at the end of the kindergarten hallway Bring lunch box or lunch money-$2 Do not bring school supplies until “Meet the Teacher”

9 How will you know who your child’s teacher is?
•When is “Meet the Teacher?” Friday September 2nd. •What is the “official” first day of school? September 6th Bring school supplies (please do not label supplies) •Be sure to bring your child’s completed health assessment!

10 What your child needs for school…
Book bag Lunch box or lunch money Medications (must have a plan on file) Healthy snack Weather appropriate change of clothes (to keep at school)

11 Getting Ready for Kindergarten!!
Visit your public library and read! Learn letters, numbers, colors and shapes! Practice self-help skills! Use bathroom/wash hands independently! Cleaning up after yourself Opening drinks/lunch items Practice fine motor skills! (Buttoning/snapping/zipping/tying shoe laces Coloring, cutting with scissors Writing your first name. As school approaches try to set a sleep schedule.

12 Resources for Parents Family Academy! Free classes!
To promote continued cooperation between families and schools, we offer Family Academy – a series of classes, workshops and events aimed at helping families learn to engage with the school system and positively contribute to their child’s academic and social success. Classes are offered in English and Spanish. Contact Rosa Rangel at (919)   Project Enlightenment! Project Enlightenment offers workshops to parents with young children birth through kindergarten age. Topics include discipline techniques, communication, school readiness, child development and more.
