Sparta Sparta is landlocked (not accessible to sea) in the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Sparta had a hybrid government. – Monarchy: 2 kings. King led the army in battle. – Oligarchy: Council of elders (28 members over the age of 60, elected for life). – Democracy: Assembly. 9,000 citizens could recommend laws to council. 5 ephors acted like cops to enforce the law. (they could remove a king who broke the law)

Boys taken from family at age 7 to live in army barracks, and spent 20+ years in the army. Sparta was like a huge army camp. Girls were raised to have strong children. Spartans used iron rods as money. Spartans did NOT value luxury goods or beautiful buildings.
