SQ3R Objective: I can answer my own questions using the text (research skill). I can skim/scan the text for important information and details. I can summarize the main idea/objective question of the section using the details I gathered while reading.

What is it? ◦Survey: record titles and subtitles ◦Question: change headings into 5W/H questions: who, what, when, where, why, how ◦Read: answer your question INCLUDING NECESSARY DETAILS! ◦Recite: record key terms and key names ◦Summary: use the title and main idea in the topic sentence

Titles: RED – Human Perspective BLUE – overall topic; come up with a question that you will answer after reading the sub-section GREEN – sub-topic; come up with a question that will be answered in that small segment

Q: Why is it the “cradle of humanity” What about the location makes it a good trading center?

“Human Perspective” Q: Why is East Africa called the “cradle of civilization”? A: After doing research in the Olduvai Gorge (northern Tanzania), Louis Leakey discovered fossils from 65 ancient humans in 1931. Later, he discovered a human that used stone tools: Homo Habilis. East Africa is a cultural crossroads and area of history because of its location near the ocean – this attracted a lot of people.

Summary When finished with SQ3R: ◦Summarize the main idea in a 6-8 sentence paragraph (using the correct structure – topic, RDF, explain, etc.) ◦This should include the details you’ve found in the text while developing your questions ◦Choose one of the Objective questions and summarize the info you found in the chapter that would answer the question. ◦TOTAL: TWO (2) Summaries at the end of SQ3R ◦Check with another person that is finished
